That said if 4 controllers can connect to the system, and the dock is simply charging + TV output, I would imagine that the number of connected controllers will still be the same.
As for MK8 multiplayer being TV only, they do have it running at 1080/60 docked and 720/60 undocked so I can imagine it's relatively taxing on the system which would explain the lack of undocked multiplayer (probably also for battery life reasons), however I would assume that 4 controllers can be connected at all times (also 8 controllers can be connected as 8 player Super Bomberman R is a thing, docked at least.), it makes very little sense for it not to be that way, and as for undocked vs docked multiplayer it's probably just down to the developer of the game being able to make it work on the switch, if it runs fine it probably will be allowed.
That said I'm by no means an expert on the situation I'm just sort of extrapolating based on the information we have, which isn't really enough, but I guess if there was, this discussion wouldn't be a thing.
Anyway, obviously this game would be a great fit for switch due to the way the joycons work. All you need to do is find another person and you've got 2-player co-op.
Did they show off eight player bomberman? The web site still says the multiplayer is TBA. It mentions 8 player for the battle mode, but doesn't say if that's available for docked play, it only lists online and local connection (i.e. multiple systems). I'd love to see proof of that kind of thing, though. I could see hardware limitations causing problems with offline multiplayer, however. It really depends on how the systems connect to one another when using the local wireless connection. Considering the size and weight of the system, it's possible they're using the same channels for the controllers as they use for the wireless connection. Also, considering it's Nintendo and looking at their pricing scheme for the controllers, it wouldn't surprise me if they locked those channels to local wireless when the system isn't docked. They wouldn't want the system to be TOO portable, now, and I'm sure they'd prefer to push families into buying multiple systems and games for when the kids are on the go.
System can support 8 controllers at a time. 4 pro controllers or 8 joy cons... Couch co or is kinda Nintendos hallmark

You have to use Google translate, but the Japanese page for Mario kart 8 shows 4 player support for both on TV and tabletop play with Joy cons indicated as the controller. It's still likely that pro controllers could be used also, but no official word
