I'd say it's a pretty fair difficulty, nothing that seems absolutely impossible to do, but it does get significantly harder in the last level and boss battle...which makes sense, being the final levels and all X3

Destrucible environments, good script. Adjustable difficulty would have been nice...
As for difficulty, projectile enemies have stupid good accuracy, so any place with a handful of them and inst-kill drops are a challenge.
It also becomes harder if you want to get all the achievements.
In all honesty, if you are asking these questions because you are on the fence about buying the game, I would say go for it if you love video game tropes and a game that has a splash of Sonic, Mega-man and Mario in it, in a good way.
those purple blocks (like underneath the falling bridge in insektia) used to not be there.
