FG42 needs a bolt holdopen on automatic
FG42 fullauto fire has a bolt hold open so no cocking the gun after emptying the mag, but the semi does not hold the bolt open so priming the gun is needed.
When the gun fires from automatic it has an open bolt and when you switch to semi it closes the dust cover.
see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISKnl1OnI9Y note the video uses the second model FG42 wich is cheeper and more common than the first model wich DOI uses.
Personaly I dislike the first model FG42 because it had structure issues that were fixed with the second. Also the first model is very rare and did'nt see as much fighting as the second

Are you taking about the firing animation or about the bolt being unnecessarily pulled back when reloading because this was an automatic process (at least on the first one).
Did you try starting a discussion about this? Because the reload time it pretty long and this step could be skipped. But if it is for balancing porpoises, there is nothing to be changed.
Unrealistically lengthening reload times is a terrible way to balance weapons in my opinion. If the soldier didn't have to do it IRL, then you shouldn't have to do it In Game. Sure it has a fast fire rate and 1HK, plus it can be fitted with a scope, but it chews through its magazine in 1.5 seconds on full auto, making it nearly useless for suppressive fire unless you use it on semi, but then you'd have to pull the bolt back before reloading since that's how the FG42 works.

Really though, we've got 250 rounds in the MG42/Browning/Vickers, 50 round drum for the MG34, but only a lowly 20 in the FG42. I don't think shortening it's full-auto reload time would unbalance it.

Don't even get me started comparing the FG42 to the Stg44. If the FG42 would be OP with faster reload, then the Stg44 has been more than OP this whole time.
The Tommy's have bolt catches yet it's still possible to lengthen them by having the character tap that ass.
I know man, I hate that crap so much. Just reload the gun and stop screwing around.

The actual original gun had a maximum capacity of 20 rounds so we could not complain. Lets be happy that at least we got the first version of the gun. I heard that the second one had no full auto mode? Is it true? And the FG 42 had a spike bayonet. The gun is long, it might be fun to have one. Still it would not be very used in-game.
Uh, the second pattern FG-42 is like the first pattern, just that it's simplified and many of the ergonomic boo-boos got ironed out. It still has the spike bayonet and the bipods. And it uses a ZFG-42 scope instead of a ZF-4.

Come on, think about it, there is no reason to remove the full auto capability and spike bayonet of the second pattern when that is literally one of the requirements the Luftwaffe put to the designers and engineers.

So you mean the bolt doesn't need to be pulled back on Tommy gun and M1A1 thompson ?

duh
I think the bolt will hold open regardless of the selector switch's position.

But they do it in 99% of the games I play, why is that bolt being pulled back?
Also, the first model has a stripper clip guide, and topping off rounds would be a cool feature.

FG42 Ausführung 2 still had its Full-Auto. The handling got improved and a few minor details have been added (dust cover on magwell, redesign of stock etc)
AND pulling the bolt back is unnecessary ingame, because it had a bolt catch if the mag was empty. Switching from Semi to Full-Auto.....first round fired from closed-bolt, afterwards it stays in open-bolt position.

They simply do not have the same eye for detail that Mr. B had.
