A 97r pan would completely block the sights and mandate installing AA sights as well, which also kinda means a new delta_sequence. (but who cares about deltas) That and most 97r drums are seen on Lewis Aircraft guns.
The Vickers is based on a rare configuration of the Mk VI spotted in Malaya (obviously without some guy lugging a water bucket around).
Also I've come to accept that all NWI games will have one or two weird gun choices, explaining stuff like the the Vickers and C96 carbine in DoI or the MP40 in insurgency
Maybe it was the Vickers GO you're remembering them testing? It was temporarly a weapon (kinda), and its name hung around the .txt for a while. Dunno, maybe it was K. I recall them saying that the De Lisle (a slighly better Welrod!) was also in testing for the Commandos, but then factions were dropped and that was the end of that
