What's the deal with the Nvidia Shadows, PCSS HFTS?
So just by enabling the PCSS shadows from ultra I lose about 20-25 fps and the HTFS shadows cost me about 30fps!! I don't get it, yeah they look more realistic but 30 fps realistic. I use the HFTS shadows on the Division and I can maintain a pretty solid 60fps maxed out.

If you're having performance issues DO NOT use the PCSS or HFTS shadows.

Here I am barely maintaining 45 fps on low settings on a 970 and you are talking about PCSS?

There must be something up with the 970 cards for this game then. With everything maxed except for extra details on 0%, Ultra shadows and TXAA x2 I get mostly 60 fps with a few dips to low 50's.

This is on am I5 6600k @4.4ghz and a gtx 1070.

By maxed did you just set the main setting to ultra and left it there? Because that's not max settings.Head light shadows on ultra are 2 cars but they can manually be increased to 4.The game is not maxed until hardware can enable hfts shadows which will need next gen gpus

This also proves game is not optimised. How the hell is a 1600P card like 1070 going below 60 at 1080p?

What I do is change my shadows from HFTS to PCSS and hit apply and go back into the game then exit out to the settings page and reapply the HFTS setting and go back into the game and FPS goes back up to 70-90 fps and the shadows look beatiful. So i have to do this manually everytime I start a game to get the shadows right and good fps. Im using a GTX 1080
Okay I just tried what you said and here's what it does:

Whenever you switch between the shadow modes like PCSS>HFTS, or HFTS>PCSS it defaults back to Ultra until you exit and re-enter the game. You can tell because on Ultra the shadows are super crisp but not really lifelike. On PCSS or HFTS they are more life like where the fade out the longer the shadow is. So you're just using Ultra shadows when you do that hence the performance gain.
