Watch Dogs 2 FPS issues
I've been having major troubles trying to get a consistant 60 fps and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to help me. I have a GTX 970 graphics card, i5-4670k processor @ 3.40 GHz, 8gb of RAM and my drivers are up to date. The problem I'm finding is that even on low settings I can't get a consistant 60 fps, which i find very confusing as I can run more demanding games like GTA V without any troubles. Also, changing the in game settings has a very minimal effect, which leads me to believe that this is possibly an issue to do with the game?
If anybody has any ideas on how to fix this I would really appreciate it because, unfortunately, it's slightly ruining what otherwise is a great game.

And again, PC gamers are not getting any attention... Even if the performance isn't nearly as bad as Mafia III or Dishonored 2 on launch, I think we deserve at least some comment on the performance and eventual patches that will/won't help with these issues... i7 4790K + 980 Ti, my rig should eat this game at very high/ultra (without MSSA/TXAA though, I don't care about that) 1440p, like it does with Witcher 3 or GTA V, two other gorgeous open world games that run so smoothly !
They normally only release patch notes after the patch goes live sadly. but it would be very nice for us to get some love, especially after getting the game like 2 weeks after the console launch still with major issues.

Exactly. I was full of hope when they delayed the game for PC because this could mean real work went into optimization for PC. It's still decent imo, but for 60€, I expect more performance with a 1 year old 600€ GPU and a bit more communication :/

Yeah. I even bought it twice to try to fix my launch problem. (steam and uplay) hopefully I can get a refund on my uplay version. But yeah, like even in small areas in the game where nothings going on, it still tanks to below 20 fps. How can they mess up this badly honestly.

Well, it's not as bad for me but I still expect more so I understand your concern.
What's weird for me is that performance is great while walking but when driving quite fast in the same location, I have dips into the 40s. Feels like the engine struggle to load and render efficiently the world around the player when moving fast.

damn, i get the same performance on low and ultra, 30fps for a few seconds then it tanks under 20fps no matter what im doing. hoping the patch sorts this out for good.

I am running a 1080 and 2700k o/c @ 4.2ghz. It doesn't matter if I am on ultra or low, I get the same FPS across the board. 20-60fps seems to be my range, with 30-35~ being the average. My CPU is generally around 70-80% usage, and my GPU vram is around 35-40% filled. No idea what is going, this is a HORRIBLY optimized game.

It's a shame that it's so damn fun too... I hope Ubisoft can help us out somehow.

Wow that's not good... Are you sure you're not running MSAA/TXAA ? It's the most resource demanding setting for me, I can maintain over 40 fps @1440p with very high to ultra settings for the rest. If you're not running MSAA then it's highly possible the game is running very differently from one rig to another, which is another sign of rushed optimization for PC...

I literally turned everything down to the lowest it could be and it tanks no matter what.

I run at 1440p as well, using SMAA for AA. I don't know what is wrong but this game just destroys my system. I've landed on a combo of medium/high/v.high/ultra settings. I seem to get 30-40fps everywhere, with the occassional dips in the 20's and bumps into the 50's. But even in the 40-50 range the game just feels sluggish.

Despite what the steam reviews lead you to believe and lead me to believe which is why I bought this on sale at gmg and got a uplay key, is that the game is well optimized when it is not. I mean it is a million times better optimized than WD1 was or most other Ubisoft games for that matter, but it still needs much further optimization. It is hard for me to complain too much though because it could have turned out like Mafia 3 which I've tried on my system and refunded immediately because it is probably the worst performing game I have seen in 18 years of being a pc gamer. My setup (i7 3820 3.6g, 16gbRam, gtx970) clobbers any game that is well optimized and I have no trouble running any game that is coded well at a solid 60 fps at 1920x1080 at very high or ultra. I can't run this game on ultra (forget it) or even on very high (slight frame dips to around 50 maybe less) so I run it on high. Even then I still have to enable temporal filtering which according to the nvidia watch dogs 2 performance guide is a free performance gain with it turned on with no discernable drawbacks. Only then does it stay at 60fps or close to it 99% of the time.

I saw someone else post that this game uses 95% cpu so I checked mine with hwmonitor and yea the game uses 95% or more of all cores while running. I don't know if that affects anything though because it doesn't seem to affect my game unless that's what is causing me to only be able to run it on high. Who knows.

The high CPU usage isn't the reason for the mediocre performance. I use a i7 4790K and it never goes above 60-70% utilization max, but still runs meh on my 980 Ti. Of course people with recent i5 or older CPU who see 100% utilization are held back by their CPU, which cripples the performance even more, but even when the CPU isn't chocked up, it doesn't run flawlessly.

I found a fix for my very low fps on a 970/i7. Heres the story!.

I was playing overwatch, and it kept crashing in fullscreen mode like watch dogs used to do. So I boot it up in windowed and switch it to fullscreen, it crashes, just the same as watch dogs. So I google it and people say its due to teamviewer running, so i completely get rid of that and it still crashes. I also realise I had Duet open (app for ipad to windows). so I got rid of that and it fixed my problem. I just tried Watch Dogs 2 now and it opened in fullscreen and stays in fullscreen without crashing. Also, I loaded into the game and im currently getting a solid 60-59 on high!

I guess I thought there was a bug crashing my game, maybe with the new drivers or something. But if you cant play it in fullscreen and you're getting lag, the game tanks in windowed or borderless, so delete and close any programs that use display. (teamviewer shows your display on another device, Duet turns into a different monitor for an ipad on your windows pc, duet is constantly running.)

Not sure if this will help anyone else but it for sure helped me, because im just an idiot.

EDIT: even on ultra im getting a playable 30fps.
