Forage Harvesting

So you used to be able to pick up straw and turn it to chaff with a forage harvester. now i cant pick it up.

I had a quick try to pickup the straw swath(s?) No luck with the Forage harvesters sadly. Seems like the only way is to use a baler, or a forage wagon. I'm just sticking to Harvesting grass for the chaff.

yeah i normally already did just stick to grass for chaff. and used all my straw to make bales. but since this guy had problems with doing what he wanted. i tried doing it myself because as Sir_magoo said in FS15 u used to be able to do that. well no luck now, the pickups for forage harvesters can only pick up freshly cut grass or grass that has been dried on the feeld using a tedder.

Yeah, bit of a shame really. (Though I normally stick to grass over any other crop) I was hoping to make a bit extra with the straw before I plowed the field. Perhaps a mod will be released soon that brings back the feature of using Forage headers to pick up straw swaths.

This could be a bug(they might have forgotten to add straw to the input list for the forage harvesters or headers).

The ingame help menu mentions in couple pages about being able to chop straw into chaff, along with picking it up with loader wagon or bale it.

Im really hoping it is a bug. I tried the magical silo trick and no luck. however i have been looking at all the in-game notes about this and by what i read there must be a way to turn processed Wheat or barely straw into Chaff (Pre- silage). It mentions a chopper. which i would imagine should be a forage harvester. The forage wagons work great for picking up the straw but the Big Krone harvester in FS15 would turn the processed straw into chaff. Headers used to do such will pick up grass in Fs17 but will not touch the straw left in the fields from a harvest. So untill i or somone can figure it out, I will be taking advantage of unloading my straw into a massive pile in the middle of my farms parking lot. lol

the chopper probably refers to the chopper on the combines, you enable or disable it to make the straw swaths when harvesting.

I'm just glad that any crops you unload manually actually come into contact with walls and such, instead of no clipping through the massive sheds. Used to hate needing to take long trips across the map to unload at the biogas bunker silos.

I agree that this is broken. I made millions off this in FS15 and felt it was by far the most efficient use of my fields. I believe the only point of those first could forage harvester headers is to pick up straw - that's the only listed input. I'll try the loading wagon workaround for now...

When you view it in the shop, look at the icons next to the 'seed' icon. First is grass, 2nd is hay.

The 500D is the first header than can handle wheat. It'll fit on your RSM1403.
Attach a tipper to the back of it and you'll get chaff.

The symbols on the RMS1403, when viewed in the shop, next to the seed icon, show it's good for woodchip, chaff and grass.

Straw is the stalk, chaff is the husk. Only magic (or aliens) could turn straw to husk.

Well if this is the case, then the "bug" relies in the help menu guides, and they should remove the misleading info.

Although, briquetted straw can be used as a source for biogas in reality. So we need a machine that can make straw briquette :D
Or as a biomass in power plants.

"The straw is shredded prior to briquetting, and then
compressed under very high pressure."

you are misunderstanding, we know you can cut wheat with forage harvesters. its not the problem we are having, the problem is that you used to be able to pick straw up from the ground with a pickup. as in the same rows of straw a normal harvester leaves behind and you use to make straw bales.

you used to be able to pick that up with the same thing as the UP370, and turn it into chaff. you cant anymore.

also what you say about chaff is true, but it works differnt in the game. since the forage harvesters dont leave anything behined. they take the entire plant. and magically turn it into something the game calls chaff. that means in the game when harvesting corn, you are turning the corn, the cob, the leaves. and the stalk. into chaff.

in dutch a forage harvester is called a "hakselaar" which basically means masher. which is a better name in this case.

I know this is an old thread, but I find myself searching for the a similar answer and I've found this:

This mod turns the forage harvester header into a straw chopper. You pick up the straw on the ground and the forage harvester shoots chaff into your tipper. Still cannot find a way to just pick up straw and have it stay straw into the tipper.
