Yeah you can get a LOT of woodchips from trees, but in order to maximise it you need to buy very expensive machinery for forestry. Don't forget you will also reach a point where you run out of trees and need to plant more, and they take a LONG time to re-grow.

I didn't find wood chips all that lucrative though honestly, and the market price decreases very heavily if you're selling lots and lots of them, to the point where each trailer full was getting me £500 less each time (and only about £8000 at the maximum price so it didn't take many trips to reduce the gain significantly).

I've not tried poplars yet but I think if you can plant them in a big enough field and provide them with full fertilisation, they will probably give a very good yield.
Not as fast. Seriously, a fertilized field of poplars can fill so many trailers. I admit it's a lategame thing for when you're farming trees instead of just harvesting the ones already on the map, but planting full size tress and chipping them is a waste of time and money compared to poplars. edit: ninja posted by Vandragorax. I'll just add that the price collapse is a real problem given the yield, if you just devote a small field the time needed to regrow them is long enough that the price might recover.
