Before DuPont invented nylon, hemp was a very profitable crop. It was grown for making rope and canvas. The navy was a large buyer of rope made from hemp. Before steam became popular to power ships, hemp canvas was used to make sails. There was also many other things made from hemp, paper and clothing to name a couple. Hemp oil is better than kerosene for lighting and heating, also it is slightly healthier than olive oil for cooking.
There was a lot of hemp grown in northern Indiana, that is why it is so easy to find it growing wild around there.
DuPont is the reason why it is illegal to grow hemp, they knew that if they got the government against it then they would take over the rope making market. I also beleive hemp is grown more in Europe. There is quite a difference between hemp grown for rope, paper, clothing and oil and the varity of hemp grown for marijuana. Also it is a lot less expensive to use hemp to make ethanol than corn. Hemp will produce more per acre and does't need all of the fertilizer and pesticides as corn does. Hemp will also out produce soybeans for cooking oil.
Also it was the CIA and former President Nixon's war on drugs that made hemp farming in the US illegal. The CIA was experimenting with THC, opium and heroin to use as weapons of war. Nixon's war on drugs was influenced by the drug companies to control these drugs so they could make millions.
For proof of this fact look at the costs of medical drugs in the US compared to other countries.
The funny thing is the drugs are created with funds from the government (our tax money) and manfactured in overseas plants in other countries. India is a large producer of drugs sold by pharmaceuticals in the US.
