Giants Software couldn't get the licensing agreement for JD. I believe this is because JD have some sort of their own farming type game.

There are some John Deere mods out.

You should've been playing back in 2009/11! There was virtually no brands - no New Holland, no Case, no Massey Ferguson etc.

John Deere won't give license to use them.

Yes, John Deere is very protective of their brand, and tend to not give out any licesnes that would allow some ccmpany out of their control to use their name. For example, the models would have to be a certain way, and they would need specific specs and sounds. To meet these regulations put up by Deere, the tractor would no longer fit in with the rest of the game. And the license would be costly as well. If GIANTS managed to make Deere happy with the tractor they were going to put in the game, they would then have to pay Deere for the license, which would be a high expense, probably affordable for GIANTS, but not a wise busineess move. I may have ranted a little, but i hope this answers your question thouroghly.

That also would likely have upped the game price a bit, to compensate for losses on the license.

they could still do it but it would have to be DLC. They could change $30 (U.S.) if they had enough of JDs equipment to run a strictly JD farm. A lot of people would pay that to have a larger american made product range and the fact that most people who play FS17 are not familiar with the different brands of farming equipment.

Seriously, you'd pay the price of the whole game again just to have one manufacturer's equipment added? Equipment that the modders will probably add for free anyway? I can't say I'd join you. As much as I would like to see JD, there's a point where I think if you as a company are not letting a game maker model your equipment in good faith, you are just being jerks. Wanting people to pay double the game price for the privilege of having your equipment modelled in it is WAY past that point. And you know as soon as they agree to that with JD, all the other manufacturers will want the same deal, and we will end up with a game like that train simulator, where each new machine is a $20 DLC. No, thanks. If JD doesn't want their equipment in the game because it'll give them free brand exposure, they can shove it. Other brands are plenty cool as well, IMO.

This business practice has always baffled me because they [companys] spend millions on advertising on tv ,internet ect ect ect but want large amounts of money for there products to be advertised in video games where they can be seen by the same amount of people most of the time

So why don't they Parody it. Like make it a name that is similar but not the same? Don't really make sense

That could actually make getting licenses even more difficult in the future. Something similar happened to Eurotruck Simulator, when the devs just introduced real-life trucks under fictional brand names. After having worked things out with the manufacturers, they flat-out told their community that they're never going to do that again, and rather not introduce something.
I think GIANTS is wise enough not to go there, in the first place.

They just let the modders handle it for people who want it.
