Best Starter Crop?
I have been wondering what crop is best to grow when you are just starting. By this I mean it is easy to maintain and harvest while the overall profit is still decent.

They all are about the same. The crops that sell for higher you get less yeild. Wheat and Barlye you can also use a forage wagon to pick up and sell the straw for some extra money.

If you are on Goldcrest I started out doing soybeans on 12 and then rotating what I plant on 14 and 15 between wheat, barely and sunflowers.

There is no best starter crops, you are forced to sow all the crops cause you can only store 100 tons of each in the silos, you can store additional 500 tons at the train station, but you will pay a fee if stored overnight, so short answer is sow all the crops at the same time, 1 field for 1 crop. youll make more money that way than just sowing 1 type

Soybean.

You'll get the same money pretty much as any other crop, with less running around. Example, you have a 8k wagon, your fields will give you 7k soybeans, or 14k cannola, etc. its just small things like that.

So best starter, IMHO, is soybean.

It is more about where and when you sell, than what you sell. Keep an eye on prices.

As stated, the more valuable the crop is, the less of it yields. So while soybean has a high sell rate compared to the others, you don't get as much of a yield. Sugar beets have a very low sell price compared to the rest, but you get a TON of those suckers! Everything in moderation is how I do it.

You could not pay me real cash to plant beets or potatoes in FS17. Way to much work for the same return as pretty much every other crop in the game. Root crops only have about a 2 meter or so harvest head. What that means is you drive up and down the field about 3 times (literally) more then a large combine picking most other crops. And lets not forget he said starter crop. Nooblets cant afford root farming equiment. Unless you are just absolutely planting roots for fun (are you taking your meds?) I cant see why anyone would. lol

This really is the bigggest problem with FS17 too btw. When they tried to make crops balanced it kinda created its own new skewered problem.

They all profit about the same - the better the yield, the lower the selling price. So you want to rotate all the starter planter/harvester crops around when you're first starting so you have silos full of any crop that has a demand spike.

Don't plant one crop - plant all of them.

I found this out the hard way. Still have a shed full of them and I don't know what to do with them lol. Pigs don't eat them fast enough and I haven't seen a great demand on them. I didn't even know you couldn't silo them when I started growing them.

Great Demands aren't as important in 17 as tehy were in 15. TBH, theres not much point in hoarding. I hang on to mine untill im fully harvested, then run as much as I can in one trip.

I read somewhere that they did that so people wouldnt hoard and just wait for Great Demands. GD's now are also not always the best price even.

The train os nice because you can load it up with a lot of grain and take it to the mill with the railhead load point. When its best price that is.

I think soybean is the best overall crop to start with but i sure didnt know about the overnight storeage fee at the train station.

Yeah, with potatoes and beet I just wait for the train depot to have a really good price then take everything I have in stock there in one run.

No fee if ya store things ON one of the trains =)

Also worth noting that NOTHING in this game (in terms of fees/operating costs) are pro-rated.
You can use the train yard silos for hopper storage, and long as you got it cleared out by midnight you will not be charged.
