wrapping bales for silage worth the time?
I have always done chaff for silage and never tried the bale wrapper. Just wondering if it's even worth the time

I am curious about how others feel about this as well. I have never created chaff, mostly because it takes special equipment. I've often wondered if it might be a faster and, in the long run, cheaper way to feed a larger herd of cattle.

As for wrapped bales, I've found that using the Seasons mod makes them very lucrative to sell. If I remember correctly, they bring in more than $3,000 per bale, which makes it well worth the time to cut and wrap. I'm considering using chaff for the food silage and wrapped bales for profit.

yes if you sell it and works without useing seasons mod too

I know using chaff and silage bunkers is very good for large volume of silage.

without seasons mod, silage bales are ready at once. in the bunker you have to wait during fermentation.
haven't tried bale wrapping myself, but handling bales of any kind is quite a time consuming task.
on the other hand - one plays games also to consume time, so chose the task you're happy with.

@SIMelissa
you can produce silage in the bunkers also out of grass. just mow grass and throw it into the bunker.
I normally started this way because you can use a loading wagon already for the straw of the first field, and then you can continue using it for grass to make silage.
that was more lucrative in fs13 and fs15 as silage was really overpayed. in fs17 I rarely make silage for selling, just to keep it enough to feed my cows.

It's good to try but it's not worth the time. I always used to create silage with chaff then I decided to start baling and wrapping. It is very time consuming to make and then transport and store and then finally use. You have to handle the bales way more than you have to handle using chaff for silage.

I just use a fermenting silo mod to make my silage from grass. I use some for the cattle and sell some at the BGA to process into digestate.

I only use the silo that only makes silage. I don't think I should both silage and another product.

I would lover to produce my own bio diesel, but seems like to only mods I can find also produce forage as a by product. I can understand the slurry, but not the forage.

Running a JCB Fastrac around with the Kuhn baler-wrapper (if you have the Kuhn Pack) and Ursus autostack trailer makes silage bales quick and easy. Remember compacting a silo takes time, and bales don't need compacting.

I agree with you with small time farms but when you have 50 - 100 bales you have to wrap and collect and stack and pick up and throw into the silage machine then it's not so economical.

@Bismuth
compacting is a joke, it takes very few time. espacially when you have put five or ten loading wagons of grass in the bunker.

@Kaeru Gaman, does this work with Seasons as well? Mowed grass left on the ground or in the bailer disappears overnight, and I read that even unwrapped baled grass will disappear after two days.

I don't know for sure, because I didn't try seasons yet.
but in vanilla, grass turns into chaff as soon it is put into the bunker.

Yes, you can use grass in the bunker to make silage with the Seasons mod. The grass still becomses chaff when you dump it in the bunker. It won't disappear.

The price for wrapped bales is fixed. On hard difficulty you will get $980 per bale every time you sell it (as opposed to $38 per 1000L for fermented grass). So, when the price of silage drops to, say, $30 or less, selling wrapped bales is better and more profitable.

I know this. I got bored with bunkers and bale wrapping.

???
a bale has 4000l... so if it's worth $980, that's $245 per 1000l
