What Chaff?
Hello fellow farmers,

I am new to FS17 and I am having some trouble creating chaff from wheat and barley crops after the harvester has put down the straw swath.

I have tried the Rostselmash For Up 370 and Krone EasyFlow 300 S pickup headers attached to either the Rostselmash RSM 1403 or Krone BiG X 580 forage harvesters. Tippers tried up to this point are the Kroger Agroiner HKD 302 and the Krone TX 560D.

When I unfold the header and start the harvester, it seem to be ready. But nothing ever gets picked up. When I trade out the header for the Krone xDisc 620, it will collect grass and crops just fine.

Curiuos if I am missing a step. Thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

The only crop that gives you chaff is corn.

I use grass to fill make silage, i dont like to waste a field to make silage.

Besides which you already harvested the crop. Can't get chaff from straw!

I'm a newbie myself and haven't used chaff. But I've done some reading and the game does indeed say that chaff can be made primarily from corn, but also from other crops such as wheat and barley. I believe that to harvest the crops and have chaff, you need to use a forest harvester as they have the little chaff icon. I see that you have a forage harvester. Have you tried running a trailer along side to collect whatever it despenses? (not sure if it will be harvest crop -- as usual, or chaff)

you can turn other crops into chaff BEFORE harvesting them with a normal harvester.
when you already harvested them, it's too late, just like with corn.
you can either turn it into chaff or harvest it.

I've played this series of games for years and this entire time I thought it was only corn and grass that could be made into chaff. Thanks for clarifying my misconception.

You're right. The forest harvester with the correct header will turn other crops into chaff. There are a couple of trailer that can be pulled by the forester harvesters themselves.

I was under the impression that if you harvest wheat (which only cuts the tops off) and leaves a trail of straw you can use a baler to bale it. Then you use a bale wrapper to turn it into silage.

Haven't done it myself but that's what I read. :)

You used to be able to do that but I think they have patched it.

the bale wrapper is for grass bales. straw cannot turn into silage.

@bigsnag yeah, there are mods for everything, even many for 'cheating'... ;)

You can no longer use forage harvesters to turn straw swaths into chaff like you could in previous versions.
bigsnag Nov 4, 2017 @ 11:30pm
unfortunately kaeru most mods are cheats, but silage from straw is also made with ammonium. this is to break down the lignan which is none to digestable.

you can get chaff from any crops, but must use different header for krone forage harvester accordingly.
