Ctrl + KP_period toggles between small display, large display and no display.
The new variant of the GPS mod would have to be installed on the multiplayer server, easy if the OP is self-hosting but not so simple if the OP isn't running the server. All players that wanted to play on the MP game would have to download, or be emailed, the modified GPS mod that had been made by the OP.
Additionally, it is unlikely that such a private edit would be accepted by the original author, therefore you will only be able to distribute the mod amongst a small number of friends.
What it does do tho as jules also points out, is making sure that only the people you want on gets on the server = it acts like a password as anyone that wants on the server needs that specific edited mod..
if you cant live with that, well then you have to live with the overlay or just not have it show all the manual settings..
