Silverfall: Earth Awakening

Silverfall: Earth Awakening

Now I remember why I quit playing - controls kill it.
I really enjoy action RPGs and have logged hundreds of hours into games like Diablo 2, Torchlight 2, Sacred, Fate, and Titan's quest.

I really wanted to love Silverfall, but I quit without finishing the main campaign. Sometimes new games come out, or you get busy and you drop a game for whatever reason - it happens.

So I was watching some reviews and videos on Youtube about various games and someone had a "blind" gameplay video for Silverfall, and I remembered it was a game I hadn't plyed in a while so I watched a little and soon got an itch to play it again.

Silverfall should be one of the great action RPGs, all the elements are there:

- nice random loot table
- various character build options
- cel-shaded models that hold up pretty well
- small party tactics combining Dungeon Siege with Diablo style play

But then...I get a few levels picking off zombies in camp and I gear up my spells and skills and I remember...there's an extra convoluted step between using your skills and attacks that make it maddening to play without constant micromanagement and counter intuitive play that ends up getting you killed while you growl, "that's not what I was trying to do!"

For example, I can't just queue up a heal spell, I have to have it selected, then press RMB while the cursor is hovering over me, as I'm being chased by zombies as other zombies shoot arrows at me. So if you survive that, you want to get back in there and punch zombies...well hold on, you have to re-select your physical attack button and then LMB click on the zombie. Even worse if you want to use ranged attacks, because half the time, you'll charge into melee range with your bow unless you remember to hold down SHIFT while clicking with LMB after you've selected bow attack.

Yeah yeah, some will say 'git gud' but really it's just overly convoluted for a game that moves quickly and relies on hack and slash reflexes.

So it all came back to me...and I put a lot of hours into this game before. I kept thinking if I build my party right, I can automate some of the combat micro-management, but it never really clicks and eventually I got bored of the overly stressful combat where counter-intuitive controls and micromanagement were more dangerous than lack of skill, gear, or solid party build.

Oh well, time to go back to Sacred 2, Titan's Quest Gold, and Torchlight 2 I guess.

Oh, it's not "stressful". Just forget about complex tactics. Get a good right-click attack and destroy everything that gets in your way. I only got companions to heal me up when I was farming final boss at level 90 in very hard difficulty.

That may be the way to go, but is it fun?

Heh, I ask this half-jokingly as someone who has put hundreds of hours into Diablo 2, Sacred, Sacred 2, Fate, Torchlight 2, Titan's Quest, Harbinger, Dungeon Siege, and any other action RPG I can get my hands on...so I probably will give it another shot with a powerhouse one skill main character at some point.

It's many years later and I just installed Silverfall. I'm quitting. The controls and camera are just too painful. I REALLY want to explore this old RPG but I can't do so staring at the ground the whole time, or unable to see where I want to go around an NPC, etc. I think I'm gonna bow out.
