Cant get first menu to respond WMR

I am a portal fan and am playing both the non VR versions again.
I load the VR version and get the new game quit etc menu but nothing responds.
Can move the red dot but no key press on the (I assume vive wand) work.
Do you have to have revive loaded?
or should it work without.?

it has started working but the portal gun doesn't open portals and when I move to the next level I end up stranded way outside the room and have to move into it

I'm having the same issue. The game launches, and I'm in a room with a floating menu and a red dot for a pointer. I can't select anything, no response at all.
