How do CPU get 2x Multiplier

I have been playing this on the Switch and I've noticed that in some of my tournaments, the CPU players are getting an insane amount of x2 multipliers which in turn makes them impossible to catch up to.

Is there a logic as to how these are given out? I can't seem to find any information about what causes this to happen, or how to get them for myself.
