Have I been getting the rules wrong all this time?
I've played the physical version a lot, and always had it so that once a base reaches its break point, it blows at the end of the turn even if it falls back below the BP before then. Now it seems that's not right, as in this version if a minion is moved/destroyed to bring the power below the BP, it doesn't explode.

Gotta say, I'm keeping my version as a house rule, as it's resulted in some brilliant plays over the years.

After you finish playing minions/actions, the bases are checked for scoring. Only the power at this time is considered.

If multiple bases are ready to score, one scores, and then the others are re-checked.

But once the scoring actually starts, almost nothing can stop it.

You were playing it correctly. The official rule book specifically states that once a base has reached that breaking point at any point, it WILL score no matter what happens next.

As per the physical version, it will break even if the power falls below the break point IF it was lowered after bases started scoring (e.g. power is lowered by special cards, base abilities, etc.). If you're still playing your regular minons and actions -- i.e. before base scoring -- bringing it back down under the break point will not smash the base.

If you play a minion on a base where adding its power breaks the base then remove it before the scoring phase. That base does not break. The way I've alway played it once the base scoring phase is entered all bases are checked to see if they could be scored. If so they get scored. Then once one base is fully scored the others are rechecked.

This is true, and I'm practically a veteran when it comes to Smash Up

You check if base scores only after you cannot or don't want to play any more cards (nearly at the end of your turn). If you reach breakdown and then destroy a minion or do something during your turn, it won't score. But once it scores, even if there will be no minion at all due to specials, it will score.
There is a turn order from rulebook:
1) Start turn
2) Play cards
3) Score bases
4) Draw 2 cards
5) End turn

As per the rulebook you check to see if a base has scored after you've played your cards.

For example:

Jungle Oasis needs 12 power to break.
The current minions on the base give a power total of 10.
You play Upgrade on a minion to increase it's power by 2, taking the power total up to 12.
You play a Collector, increasing the power total up to 14.
You use the Collector's ability to return a War Raptor to it's owner's hand, decreasing the power total to 11.
You then check to see if any bases score, Jungle Oasis still needs 1 power to score. You draw 2 cards. Your turn ends.
