Can I progress without my uncle in the car?

He asks if I want to continue the journey, I hop in the car but he doesn't follow. Opening his door for him doesn't work either. Is he just there as a tutorial or something?

Also, if I start over, do I have to complete the tutorial/building the car again?

Yes, if you restart the game then you dont have to play with the uncle

As Steven Jardine says you don't have to play with the uncle after playing through the first time. If you start a new game and delete your old save however then yes you will have to do the tutorial again.

once my engine malfunctioned after driving from the start. my uncle got out as i checked it, and i ran back in and left him behind.
i had no problems whatsoever, he was "gone" after that^^ he even stopped to shout at me when i bumped something

Yep Uncle can be odd sometimes, one time I got out to check the engine and as he left the car he decided to move the car and it popped up into the air. I knew Uncle was a wizard.

Also he kept yelling at me to fix it as I held a repair kit, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Then I finally was able to fix the engine. Oh Uncle *hold sides 80's comedy fashion*.
