Junkyards?

So my first time finding a junkyard I found the half car and I think you have to run it to open the gate. So I got all the needed parts out of my engine and tried to put them in the half car, but it wouldn't let me. The outline of the part didn't show up. Are you supposed to somehow make it run with only the parts already in there? It only lets me put the original parts back in.

It's just a little bit buggy sometimes. I've had the same problem, and taking all the parts out of the junkyard car (plus whatever parts I needed to borrow from my car) and dropping them all on the ground, then putting them in one by one worked.

You sometimes need to repair the parts, not replace them.

Yes, thats what I wanted to write.. sometimes you need to repair them only. You can do this easy if you have the trunk upgrade with some tools. Also check the fuel amount of the tank in the half car. Some times you need to add some fuel to make it work. These are somekind of puzzles.
