Any thoughts on getting items back after cancelling a transaction? If I just have to be extra careful, so be it, but it seems like there should be some way of doing it.
Do you use an XBox controller? If so D-Pad left or right to cycle through items that you carry. The prominent item will be held in front of you the secondary will be to the right of it. So if you sell/buy an item -with your wallet in your hand cycle until the item(s) -i think you can hold 2 items and your wallet being the third- are held out then when you finish the wallet will be last and you can get a refund or pay.
My opinion on the wallet behavior changed when I got the tool rack. Yes, it is annoying to have to keep running back to the glove compartment, but it is so convenient to just drop the crowbar or jack and have them go home, it changes your POV.
Imagine if every important tool or piece of paper in your life went home on it's own when you absentmindedly put it down.
The best alternate would be some kind of credit system where you don't need the wallet at all, but it wouldn't go along with theme of the game I guess.
