Okay here's how to find your ideal VIDEOMODE number. First add the GUID as described above. Then you can find the correct number as follows (Win10):

1. Right-click Desktop.
2. Choose "Display Settings".
3. Click blue text "Display adapter properties" (under "Display" tab, which it should open on).
4. Click "List All Modes".
5. These are the VIDEOMODE numbers, so 1 will be the first one on the list.
6. Scroll down and get counting! Then (for some reason) remove 1 from your final result.

For reference on my ROG Swift with a maximum of 2560x1440 144hz, the one I want is number 132 in the list, so I -1 and get 131 and then I have the right res/hz in game.
lol, i feel like i went to university just to find my proper res................:summerghost:

All the information you need to fix this error is in this thread, but here is my attempt at organizing it a bit better.

First off, this is to fix the following error when launching the _original_ GTR game (i.e., not GTR2, which is mentioned a couple times in this thread):

"Insufficient video memory detected. A minimum of 32 MB of free video memory required."

One quick disclaimer: I'm going to do my best to list the steps I used to fix this in a clear and easy to follow fashion, but I honestly would not beat your head against this one if you own GTR2. The original GTR would be considered a good game if it hadn't been followed by GTR2, which is considered an all-time classic. There is really nothing in GTR that you can't find done better in GTR2.

The fix:

1) Locate your Config.ini file here: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\GTR

2) If you have been jacking around with this file and can't remember all your changes, you may be smart to delete it before proceeding. Then, re-launch the game which will automatically regenerate this file with default values.

3) Now run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool - an easy way is to hit Win+R, then type "dxdiag". This should bring up the diagnostic tool, at which point you can hit the "Save All Information..." button. Save the "DxDiag.txt" file someplace easy to remember, like your desktop.

4) Next, open up this "DxDiag.txt" output and find the line labeled "Device Identifier". Copy the value on the right hand side (do not include the { } )

5) Open the Config.ini file in your GTR directory and paste in this value as the "VIDEOGUID". The line in the Config.ini should look then something like:

VIDEOGUID=D7B78E66-4266-11CF-5F61-DC01B4C2C735

But, obviously with your own "Device Identifier" on the right hand side of the "=".

6) To set an appropriate resolution, set the "VIDEOMODE" property to look like this:

VIDEOMODE=84

This value seems to work fine on my machine. I'm running 1920x1080 resolution - the game has about an inch-wide black bar on either side of my screen, but it's really not a bother. There may be a setting that would fill the whole 1920x1080, I'm just not smart enough to know it.

7) Save your Config.ini and re-launch the game. PLEASE NOTE! You will still get the error pop up notifying you of "Insufficient video memory", but this time when you click "OK", you should be taken into GTR (in all its glory!)

*** ADVANCED TINKERING ***
Based on my own testing, the steps listed above should be the only ones you need to follow to get the game running. It actually looks pretty damned good, especially considering that when this game was released, Donald Trump was the crazy guy from "The Apprentice" with weird hair.

That said, *IF* you have a _working_ install of GTR2 on your machine and are feeling brave, GTR and GTR2 share many, many Config.ini settings. You can locate your GTR2 Config.ini here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GTR2 - FIA GT Racing Game

Open both Config.ini's side by side (careful not to get confused - they are almost identical except for a handful of properties) and then you can cherry pick a few properties from GTR2 into your GTR config. These are the ones I moved over (please note, your specific values may very likely be different on your machine - use your GTR2 config as a guide):

SYSTEMRAM=2047
VIDEORAM=-2
OBJDETAIL=3
FSAA=35

To be honest, I haven't really noticed a big difference in GTR between the defaults and these "borrowed" GTR2 values, but I left them in there anyways just in case.
thank you for making this but!! It still doesn't want to work for me, I have read it twice now and tried all sorts but it still doesn't want to work. just wondering if you could help me in any way.

The option that SLO_Robert posted on the 1st page DOES work. (It was some posts later re-written by: gualtiero madonini).

You have need the config file in your Documents folder. For me there the VIDEOGUID was indeed empty. Filled in the Device Indentifier from the DxDiag report. And GO, GO, GO...

It does however still hesitate on the first go and still said that I had not enough VRAM. When clicking OK it did however load the game.

Still need to tweak it, as it doesn't look as good as back then when I owned my original copy of the game on Windows Vista/Windows 7. And need to change the resolution as mentioned in a few post onwards.

This is by far the best racing game of his time till then. GTR2 did also some good stuff, but my favorite of the two remains this one (GTR). Race07 and so suck ! (Sorry, but it's true). I can 'race' again thnx for the help.

I cannot modify any config, because there is nothing in folder. I try to run video config for game, but same error, with no config at end. So any idea how to force game to create it? Thanks.

Have you tried reinstalling the game ? Or do a fix through Steam Library ? Otherwise I could sent you the config file needed

Easiest fix is copy the values from any other simbin title installed in steam. I had to change the CPURATING, SYSTEMRAM,VIDEORAM,OBJDETAIL, and VIDEOMODE after changing VIDEOGUID.

While GT Legends could figure it out, GTR got ALL of these values wrong in the config.

GT Legends came out later (originally) then GTR. But if you don't own any other SimBin title, it will be hard.

Still need to figure out what GTR Evolution will do on my PC. Had that one for free. The RACE-series is also incl. I think - but I never liked the RACE-series that much

Evolution was convoluted, too many packs BUT they do have a ALL in 1 they released later on.
The race series wasn't bad, i don't get why anyone would have a problem with it since it's all the same as gtr & legends...............I would love to see a remake of legends !:flag:

Remake of Legens, yes please. Better yet, GTR3 (which is still in development).

I played GTR, GTR2, Race07 and both GTR's were way better then Race07. The feel, some things they did well in GTR (both) were left out in Race07. The steering mechanic from GTR was not implemented in Race07, which made it more NFS like control/feel. Jug !

RaceRoom I tried a while back, that was better then Race07

Yeah man I have revived this Game just now in my Arcade of 350 games. I have just DLed a fix for GTR2 and found my old dgVOODOO fix for GTR. It says dgVoodoo in lower right where running.

"Video memory trouble solution
ENGLISH
If your GTR - FIA GT Racing Game can't start because haven't video memory

This happens because you have videocard with more than "detectible" memory size.
The solution is use DirectX emulator like dgVoodoo.
I use it to start my own CD-game, but it work and with Steam-version.
It work even with demo."

GTR and GRT2 fully working on WIN 10 and Steam. I am right now trying to Push the AA to SUPERSAMPLING which worked with SIMBIN GT LEGENDS.

You need dgVOODOOSetup.exe, D3D8.dll, d3Dlmm.dll,DDraw.dll,dgVoodoo.conf in your GTR folder to work.

Just put those in your GTR "RACEING" [sic] folder ..seems to require old RACING and new to work I cannot delete RACEING. You do not have to Run Voodoo.exe.

The patch I downloaded 2/8/17 somewhere was called "dgVoodoo Emulator 2_53 for GTR FIA GT Racing Game.zip"

I googled it and always pops up Malware site ..but as usual the thing works with no problem. Oh well. I recently uninstalled the game and it is working perfect now. I have massive security settings in my Win 10 so all more BS. Too bad good stuff in on ? sites.

THX for the help, all that needs to be done if u have GTR2 is copy those values to GTR & it works flawlessly.
The value for me that allows 1920/1080 is:
VIDEOMODE=34
34 was my magic #
Hope that helps some1 who ONLY has GTR & no GTR2

Ur right, no need to play GTR cause GTR2 is better.
Still looks good for it's age

Das ist mein Setup! Danke!

In the meantime I upgraded from Windows 7 towards Windows 10. So these are my settings now (first time that I boot GTR on Windows 10)

VIDEOGUID=D7B71E3E-5741-11CF-F867-A4161BC2D735
VIDEOMODE=36

// I have a Gigabyte GTX 960 and a 22" screen, running at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz //
