This worked for me, but number 3 I do not understand and cannot get better quality picture. I have a 1080P 40" TV i am using, can you PLEASE tell me how to get that quality? love this game and remember how good it looked for its age in 32 bit 1920x1080. Please help me.
Thank you for the quick response and the solution to the game not running. KUDOS
I have Windows 10 and if you follow the instrucions, the game will run, just in lowest resolution. I have not figured out how to change the resolution, but it will give same error and then open and run. Its a little tricky, b ut if you follow EXACTLY what he says you will be able to get it to work also.
I love this game! Must play!
First off, this is to fix the following error when launching the _original_ GTR game (i.e., not GTR2, which is mentioned a couple times in this thread):
"Insufficient video memory detected. A minimum of 32 MB of free video memory required."
One quick disclaimer: I'm going to do my best to list the steps I used to fix this in a clear and easy to follow fashion, but I honestly would not beat your head against this one if you own GTR2. The original GTR would be considered a good game if it hadn't been followed by GTR2, which is considered an all-time classic. There is really nothing in GTR that you can't find done better in GTR2.
The fix:
1) Locate your Config.ini file here: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\GTR
2) If you have been jacking around with this file and can't remember all your changes, you may be smart to delete it before proceeding. Then, re-launch the game which will automatically regenerate this file with default values.
3) Now run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool - an easy way is to hit Win+R, then type "dxdiag". This should bring up the diagnostic tool, at which point you can hit the "Save All Information..." button. Save the "DxDiag.txt" file someplace easy to remember, like your desktop.
4) Next, open up this "DxDiag.txt" output and find the line labeled "Device Identifier". Copy the value on the right hand side (do not include the { } )
5) Open the Config.ini file in your GTR directory and paste in this value as the "VIDEOGUID". The line in the Config.ini should look then something like:
VIDEOGUID=D7B78E66-4266-11CF-5F61-DC01B4C2C735
But, obviously with your own "Device Identifier" on the right hand side of the "=".
6) To set an appropriate resolution, set the "VIDEOMODE" property to look like this:
VIDEOMODE=84
This value seems to work fine on my machine. I'm running 1920x1080 resolution - the game has about an inch-wide black bar on either side of my screen, but it's really not a bother. There may be a setting that would fill the whole 1920x1080, I'm just not smart enough to know it.
7) Save your Config.ini and re-launch the game. PLEASE NOTE! You will still get the error pop up notifying you of "Insufficient video memory", but this time when you click "OK", you should be taken into GTR (in all its glory!)
*** ADVANCED TINKERING ***
Based on my own testing, the steps listed above should be the only ones you need to follow to get the game running. It actually looks pretty damned good, especially considering that when this game was released, Donald Trump was the crazy guy from "The Apprentice" with weird hair.
That said, *IF* you have a _working_ install of GTR2 on your machine and are feeling brave, GTR and GTR2 share many, many Config.ini settings. You can locate your GTR2 Config.ini here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GTR2 - FIA GT Racing Game
Open both Config.ini's side by side (careful not to get confused - they are almost identical except for a handful of properties) and then you can cherry pick a few properties from GTR2 into your GTR config. These are the ones I moved over (please note, your specific values may very likely be different on your machine - use your GTR2 config as a guide):
SYSTEMRAM=2047
VIDEORAM=-2
OBJDETAIL=3
FSAA=35
To be honest, I haven't really noticed a big difference in GTR between the defaults and these "borrowed" GTR2 values, but I left them in there anyways just in case.
worked for me, although I cannot get the video res right. but as far as the game launching -it does. still gives error then just opens and runs. thanx @nhill40
I really wanna play this & FINISH IT.
then i will enjoy gtr2.
THX if thee is a better value i can use
The value for me that allows 1920/1080 is:
VIDEOMODE=34
34 was my magic #
Hope that helps some1 who ONLY has GTR & no GTR2
Ur right, no need to play GTR cause GTR2 is better.
Still looks good for it's age
The game SHOULD start, i know i had the same issue as you until i found the value in GTR2 for screen resolution to be >> VIDEOMODE=34
34 was my magic #
