Yes and no? My first win was a lot of luck but after going through the levels over and over (and unlocking all the arcana/relic/suit) you could pretty much choose what to start with and go with the setup you're most familiar with.
I know Enter the Gungeon depends on a lot of luck to get far, unless you're a bullet hell god being able to dodge at an instant.
When you unlock things, how did it feel afterwards as opposed to the first few times when you would start and play? Do you feel like its still luck based to get far? Or unlocking things pretty much helps you get to the end, and you provide the skills to get there?
Sorry I feel like I'm repeating myself and perhaps you too. Just trying to get to the bottom of the how this game feels in terms of how its played and how you are rewarded. I'm interested because the combat looks really fun.
Unfortunately, that's all we know so far. I don't think the devs have said anything else.
I haven't played Enter the Gungeon, so I can't compare it to this game. But I daresay unlocking stuff made it easier. The robes/capes give you additional boosts (the original Hope and Patience robes do nothing until you've unlocked the others), you get more arcana to choose from so you could try combinations that work well for you, and you could choose your starting relic which suits your playstyle. After you've reached the bosses a few times, you'll get the hang of their combat styles and you'll develop the skills to beat them.
Like I said, my first win was pretty much luck (my relics really worked well together, plus I had 2 safety nets), but then I got more used to the gameplay have since gotten my favorite build, so I pretty much stick to it and breeze through. If I ever try a different build, I'd take some time to get used to it. XD
And yeah, the combat is fun. It's the reason I keep on playing this game after unlocking everything, because otherwise the game is pretty repetitive once you've got it all.
I know that the style is, you die, you start from scratch with enter the gungeon, while in this one, there is a sort of progression, which can be used from the start. There is a small progression in Enter the Gungeon, but it is still dependent on luck. You unlock new items and guns to use from random drops, which are added to the pool of potential drops you can get in any one run after.
Perhaps I should make a new thread on the topic of how this game plays and what its mechanics are like compared to other games.
Another thing that reduces the impact of luck is that there really isn't anything like Gungeon's chest system. Bosses and special rooms still give random rewards, but I find that the choices I make in Wizard of Legends' shops are much more impactful than the choices at the Gungeon shops.
For people who are looking for more luck-based play, there is an option to randomize your starting setup. Activating it costs gems (the currency for unlocks) so you at least need to be decent at the game if you want to use it every run. I personally didn't use it until I'd beaten the game several times, so the cost didn't matter at that point, but I imagine it might if you want to use it before beating the game.
Hope that helps!
