How do you get better at this game?
I am not used to playing rogue-like games, this game is extremely fun but I am really bad at it, failing to reach the first boss most of the time.

Any tips/tricks or strategies?

- Try using a controller
- Buy some spells or especially a special robe like Pace, which ups your movespeed. Good training wheels.
- Don't worry about dying for a while and learn what all the enemies do. Practice your movement skills with each enemy.
- Take the dungeon a little slower, if you rush into a room you could be 2 steps from an enemy projectile.
- Destroy the environment to see better (trees)
- Once you learn the enemies, do a visual once-over of the room when you enter it. Decide your tactics based on what you see (area nuke the mage's summons, then kill the archer, then the melee guy, etc.)
- Start using the environment. Hit enemies into pits, use walls as cover from archers, kite enemies around
- Begin learning what all the relics do so you can make more effective purchases during your runs. Learn what will be the highest value investment from the shop at the given time in your run.
- Build a spell kit that suits your playstyle and has as few weaknesses as possible. Ex. if it's a very close-range build, do I have a defense robe? Can I get defense relics?
- Understand when it's time to buy a healing potion at the shop instead of getting new gear.

Good luck!

Try to not lose too much health when fighting. Use your spells to do some damage or slow/stun enemies and defend with your basic attack (pushing foes) while your spells are on cooldown. And don't forget to stay on the move.

Maybe try to get 75 gems and buy the light blue costume that give you more armor and damage I think. Then use your gems to buy more spells first and find some you're comfortable with to defeat first boss to gather more gems during your run.

Great tips by Fridge Lord. I adhere to many of those myself. I'll try to toss a few more out there.

- Don't be afraid to take it slow. If you have ranged arcana (Like Bouncing Surge, Ice Spear, etc.), you can snipe enemies before the fight begins.
- Defensive arcana are actually good. Earthen Aegis, Volt Pinball, etc., combined with a Basic that has good range, you can effectively avoid taking damage at all.
- Relics are your friend! If you can get it, the Relic VIP item decreases their gold costs, allowing you to gain many fairly early. Having several is important to winning.
- Lifeleech and health orb drop relics can be helpful! They allow you to build sustain for longer runs. Health on hit and increased health orb drops combined are great!
- The Bolt Rail Basic (Lightening) is pretty good defensively! You can stunlock, hit them at range, and easily hit several at once, even around corners!

An important tip for fighting the magic council members is that when they dont have their yellow aura you are able to stun them and pull of a big combo. Depending on which level you are on they will launch 3, 4, or 5 attacks, after which they stand still and lose their aura. Focus on dodging while they are launching their attacks then close in for the combo

Yeah this is pretty important. Depending on your setup, you can plink away at them for damage while they're dishing out their attacks, or focus on dodging and wait until their aura drops to do so.
