I think I just figured it out. I got further into the first level, and found some new spells that were automatically mapped to LB and RB.
So, is that how it works? At game start, you can only equip A, B, X, Y spells. You have to find more spells during the run to add LB and RB to your arsenal?
Very confusing UI for something so simple.
If you want to start out with a spell in those slots, maybe you can change the controller layout - I've seen the option, I just don't know what type does what and if there is one that suits your needs.
