Then I suggest you turn the difficulty down to easy :)

yeah this game is quite rough for newbs but i think the devs nailed the balance between easy and hard its quite balance i personally think there could be a few tweeks but you never know right?

Like all games of this nature, Expeditions: Vikings is quite easy if 1) you understand the mechanics; and 2) build a min-max party. I was dying a lot even on my first game - a Hard run - but I just finished my 2nd game at Impossible with virtually no deaths after the "capture" fight. (That's a fight you can avoid, and I don't know if anyone can do that with zero deaths without spamming re-load.) And I did not even run a pure min-max party, as I wanted to use two of the pre-made characters so I can sleep with Nefja, LOL. Begin with checking the various guides posted on this forum.

"you need to build a min-max party"

But that's not something you should be expected to know going in. It kinda kills the game for me.

if you are having trouble, I suggest you turn the time limits off first, and keep trying it on normal.
There are a lot of tutorials here and online, and you can learn by doing as well with the time off you can rest up.

Part of it is knowing what to expect as well. Without spoiling anything, this is a violent world that you live in and you will constantly have to fight, so you need to get good at it. The game will constantly pit your team of 5 against 7-9 enemy, so expect a guy casting buffs and demoralize every freaking round. Expect 3 archers to all fire quickshot at your weakest guy and kill him if they can get to him. Expect your shield to get pulled off and 4 melee guys to kill your tank. Expect every time you get knocked down to have a 50% or worse injury to treat that will eat up your medicine in short order. Expect that attacking a camp/fortified position will mean traps that half kill your guys.

what to do about it? Learn terrain and tactics. Stay back, don't take the obvious path up the middle. Get behind cover. block chokepoints. taunt archers and pick them off. demoralize. Have water bottles to put out fire arrow. focus kill one target before moving to another if you can. Fight dirty... throw a rock to get harried then hit them for 20% more because you took that bonus. Flank. Grab and stab. extend a spear over cover. throw caltrops, grease, whatever. Win at all costs and avoid having anyone knocked down at all costs.

I was feeling the same sense of frustration when I first encountered Hrodgaerda. It seemed no matter WHAT I did, that battle was quite literally unwinnable. Just as I was about to uninstall the game, I went into the options and found the difficulty slider, and realized I had been playing on Hard difficulty the entire time. I turned it down to easy just to get through that one fight.

Enemy archers seem to have much higher hit chance than player archers, which can make some fights unwinnable on higher difficulties, especially when you don't have many archers of your own, and you don't have any cover. I'd often encounter battles where 2 of my guys were killed before even having my first attack turn.

Turn the difficulty down.

the enemy have 2 to 1 numbers and can afford a guy to demoralize every round. Ive even seen the AI cure its archers of demoralize and then ranging shot and then shoot you. So yea, if you can handle archers, you are more than 1/2 way to winning. Archery and traps are its main strategy in most fights.

im playing on impossible, the challenge is ok, you just need to optimize your party. I dont use created merks.

Here is my party.
All defaults, 1 archer/dagger, 1 healer sling/dagger, mh- sword, berserker, 1 tank axe and spearman/dagger.

All your tanks should have stun, kick-stun, which is op, as it disables for 2 turn, opportunity with stun attack, serve pretty much as disablers. Everyone except berserker guy, you can recruit early, should run with a shield.
Everyone should have 50% crit resistance, a must if you dont want to be one shoted. +1 mov for frontliners.

Strat is pretty simple, first turn - make sure to take cover an archer and berserker. Second turn, you kick/disable anyone who comes close, archer can do 2-3 shots with leadership to snipe distant people, craft him a t3 bow with most damage. Try to taunt their archers, or move your tanks to block them (beware of traps), assasinate stunned guys. Tyrs blessings, ect. Assasinate 1-2 shot anyone.

Your archer will be sniped in 1 hit, whenver possible, make sure to run with dagger/shield as his default weapon.

My custom merks serve as skill spounges, crafting etc. So far i only crafted bow and 3 daggers. Thinking on crafting ranged resist armor for my backline, when i get enough leather.

Besides some fights in ch1, where you can come unprepared or with smaller army, ch2 becomes pretty easy.

Just get 2 warriors axe/shield, 1 healer with shield, 2 archers, and ure guy (zerk is fine, rogue dagger/bow more versatile i guess). Use ure shield guys to block line of sight of ennemies archers, and kill the bad guys with your own archers.
Quiet easy if you can keep ure 2 lines formation ready . Archers are definitively the key.

One trick I learned the hard way, is to go for the enemy healers... there's nothing more problematic than facing an enemy party with several healers, but if you take them out, you're much more likely to face down the rest. Even if it is a bit morally dubious... :steamsad:
