Dane Axe Swipe Skill
How is this supposed to work?

I see three enemies, all standing next to each other, one directly to the left, the other one square up on the right, but still next to the guy in the middle.

I hit the guy in the middle with swipe and...

only the guy in the middle gets hit. I figure if it's a "must be in a strict line" thing, then at least the guy on the left should have also gotten hit. if it worked like it is described for the skill, the guy on the right AND the left should have gotten hit as well.

nobody had any shields, just farmers (the totem knockdown quest in Perth).

so... what's up with that?

looks broken to me.

just tried it again, this time with 2 guys standing right next to each other. instead of attacking from range, walked right up in front of them and then used swipe.

does. not. work.

fix please.

dane axe is weak enough (compared to things like bows) that its penultimate skill should not be broken.

can provide screenshots or even a savegame right before the fight to prove what I am saying.

it simply doesn't work.

3rd scenario:

3 wolves, one in front of me, one to the left, one to the right, all right next to each other and me....

nada.

it for sure is broken.

have I mentioned it's broken?

pretty sure I did.

lol just pulling your chain.

I mean, yeah, it's broken, but the repeated mentions were just for fun.

I wouldn't say the dane axe is bad, its strength is that it and the spear are the weapons that need the least investment in weapon skills. With a one handed weapon you'll either increase shields or dual wielding and with ranged weapons you need a ton of passive skills. That frees a lot of skillpoints for a two-handed weapon user. They are pretty cheap on the attributes as well, With both of the two-handers you really only need max strength (axe) or finesse (spear) and a 6 perception for Keen Eye, which is pretty much a must if you aren't using a sword. The damage is better than a shield user (with the exception that swords have Heavy Swing and Execute making them great against those endgame enemies with 100% DR), but not as good as dual wield. So it's a great choice for a throwing or support character.

I agree they aren't the best weapons, but they have their niche.

You missed one of the best things about them, range. An extra hex of range might not sound like much, but when everyone is packed together like sardines being able to have your Dane axe and Spear users attack from behind the sword and axe characters is invaluable.

all of those arguments apply to bows.. which do the same base damage but higher AP, have better range, and can fire twice per round.

Two shots, assuming you haven't moved, don't get demoralized, your targets aren't behind cover, your targets aren't using a shield or any of the other factors that affect accuracy...

You're also hoping you aren't at melee range where an opponent will get an AoO if you attack.

Don't get me wrong, bows are great. But they have their limitations as well. The line of sight can be a little finnicky in this game, particularly with elevation changes (seriously Vikings can't aim above eye level?), and, while you can't shoot through cover, you can hit characters through cover with the dane axe and spear. If you have bow users you pretty much need a dedicated character to babysit them every round either: curing them of status effects (There's Odin's Favor, but it only lasts three rounds), flushing targets out of cover, blocking targets that would engage them in melee, etc.

nah. you're splitting hairs.

basically, the most powerful team you can put together, if the most boring, is 3 shield/axe up front, 3 bow in the back. shield issues are dealth with by the axes, bows mow everything else down.

cover is irrelevant, because it is SOOO easy to pull enemies out of cover.

of course, this is all an aside from the fact that none of this has to do with the swipe skill being broken, which is rather the topic of this thread. ;)

@Ichthyc Let me see if I understand, do you mean the swipe skill is broken?
