To raid or not to raid
So I just crossed the sea in my longship. Trying to decide whether to come as a true viking raiding and pillaging or to go the peaceful route. Has anyone had any experience with both of these paths?

I raided Northumbria, and sided with the Picts, I liked the ending I got. However you miss out on the great heathen army quest.
Do a save game after you land and play both.

Its the best to decide that when you are starting a new game. Or you going to play as real viking or trader/explorer.

You only get that if you don't side with any of them? How does that even work? I mean I get the raiding part but do you even get any kind of quests?

Well, the game is settled before the year 800. Its just too early for the G.H.A.

To be honest the whole mix up makes no sense to me whatsoever. The game would have been fine without it and certain subplots, instead focussing on a more distinct feel between going as traders or raiders. The whole Orkney thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either. It could have been a great location if fleshed out properly.

There is a quest called 'the great heathen army', not that it really is the historical great heathen army. It involve invading Britain with your forces that have gathered in Orkney. If you form a proper aliance you don't get to do said quest. You have one more oportunity, which is to invade during the victory feast, while whatever faction you aligned with is weak. Which is sort of what I think Odin was getting at with his discussion, and the dream. To gain power comes with great loss. I.e. Aife and the Pictish aliance; though the ending with the aliance is still rather good.

Can someone help me with this? I went to Scarborough and attacked everything, then I went to Steinn the Clever. I fought his group and won, not killing anyone. He talks about him gathering an army, but it takes time. Then I get no quest or anything to do.

I went to the other kings. The one in Orkney said I should just leave. His rival in the woods offers me an alliance, which I didn't accept. The one in Perth offers me an alliance as well, though I have to proof myself first.
I know I can backstab them later, but that's only because I've played the game before. It isn't clear in the beginning at all. I don't want to ally with them. I want to fight them and gather an army. How do I do this?

You can't.

It's not meant to be flippant but you just can't. There is no way. If you do not do their quests (especially the Northumbrian ones) you can't progress. Without the these ally quests you will not gain access to Dun Phris, however you need Dun Phris to support their indepedance to trigger the Great Heathen army quest which is the one you want. So you have to carry their quests through at least one side. There is no other way to get the Heathen Army quest and honestly no other way to gather enough strength otherwise... without Dun Phris, the Legion and a couple of other characters you meet in Perth and the Swamp and Yngilwood etc. there is no way for you to get enough power to launch your invasion. You also won't get to finish the Isle of the Apples Quest or the Last expedition quest or the escaped thralls quest. You'll simply be stuck and have to wait out the timer. Since you will not be gaining wealth you will also not be able to get enough wealth to win the game by having enough wealth... so yeah. Oh and you also won't be able to finish your companions quest.

You need a certain amount of power? Because that also isn't explained anywhere in game. I don't even know what power and prosperity do exactly.
So I also should neglect any building that gives only prosperity? Because power is a priority now? Well...I hope I can scrap that farm I just build. :p

Thanks for the help. I will "assist" Perth for now.

Well for the invasion to be successfull on your own you need over 100 power as far as I could gather. That way you can invade on your own or betray your allies after the fight and take over. But you can simply side with them and then basically Power and Wealth do not matter because you have a strong ally and therefore win the game regardlessly. However if you have neither or fail the invasion (which can happen) if you have 100 wealth you will still win because you are the wealthiest clan. If you have not enough wealth but have over 100 power you can also win.

Basically the system is pretty rubbish. You have no way to invade indepedently without first doing busy work for your "allies" and you have no way to stay peaceful unless you want to basically lose the game. You have to support either one of your allies in their invasion to win without having enough power.

you can ask steinn the clever abou how the preparations for the invasion are going, when you hit about 50 power he will say that you have half a thousand warriors and that the preparations are halfway done

it should be quite obvious that if you want to invade then you shoudl focus on power -_-

cant really kill people by throwing gold coins at them ;p

I went peaceful....till I was forced to choose a side...said ♥♥♥♥ yall to both and then raided EVERYTHING - I even went back to the first town and went "SURPRISE MOTHAFUGGAAS!!!"

I'm glad I still focused on power so I could do that.
