The Rats and Erlingr's Farm

I'm doing the Rat quest in Ribe, and have a couple of questions:

1) I don't really want to give the farm to thieving kids. Is the only alternative to kill them?

2) If I don't give them the farm, will it be left empty for the rest of the game? Or will I be able to offer it to someone else?

You could just not do the quest.
AFAIK, there are no other parties you can settle on the farm.

If I let the kids take over the farm, or if I let Erlingr's women remain at the farm, will it produce resources for me?

I think the only choices for farm ownership is the Rats, or whatever you left alive of the original owners.

The alternative to fighting them or giving them the farm is just ignoring the quest. Its only like 2 points you give up. Nonlethal fight approach isn't really acknowleged.

I ended up giving them the farm and didn't have any regrets. You take a small prosperity hit, but the Kids really are grateful for the chance, and if you visit them at the farm you get a very nice gift and piece of mind. People from your village help teach them to farm too.
