Seems like the guy in question was further east, on his own, on the other side of the map. I guess he broke off and ran a different direction during the initial chase?
When I approached the 'ambush location' I saw the bandits and realised it was an ambush. However, when I tried to move around the bandits and take them by surprise I was unable to attack them (despite the red edged sword cursor). The only way I could enter combat was to literally shoulder them aside to walk into the middle of the ambush site!
May I suggest 'Devs' this needs to be addressed.
Cheers. :)
I tried to ambush them, but the game does not let me do it and as soon as the combat starts, the enemy goes first and their archers incapacitate at least one and injure a few of my hird!
Attack them from behind you will be in contatc with their archer and you will wipe them in no time.
As for the quest not making sense, it's... I admit you have to be particularly attentive to work this out, but the guy who shouts for you to catch the thieves initially is actually not the farmer you find beaten up inside later. That's the bandit leader pretending to be a farmer.
I'll try again.
I get the idea, but I think the execution needs a little adjustment. When you approach them and the guy yells at you to chase after them, your whole focus is on the bandits that run away. If he ran off afterwards, most likely he's off sceen and the player doesn't even notice. The player doesn't know that he is the bandit, only a quest giver asking for help, so they ignore him and focus on the objective.
Then after killing the bandits ( and speaking with the owners ) you really don't have any direction or clue that someone outside of that group ran off with it ( aside from a blue bandit reference - hence the confusion ). Though in all honesty I might have missed something when the owners mentioned about me "finishing the job". Which I thought was referencing the guys who ran away.
Personally I would just add a note on one of the bodies ( from the bandit leader ) telling them to meet up at their usual X location after any robbery, and skip the extra step speaking with the owners until you have the item in question. Or even better just have the item on one of the bandits you chase. In the end It's a simple kill and fetch quest, I wouldn't try to over complicate things.
I tried again yesterday and was able to beat them.
I lost my main character and Ketiil on the first turn to dead-eye archers, but was able to take out the group through some smart maneuvering and some dumb decisions on the part of the AI.
