They increase the speed with which upgrades to your settlement are built... those are pretty important (but I can't speak to their story relevance)

but can you get more?
Yeah, there are quite a few opportunities where you have the chance to enslave people you run across.

You can also buy slaves (thralls) from merchants. Do it if you don't want to risk possible worldchanger thing later you may stick with decision to grant live world thralls their freedom in some quest or random encounter.
But before someone finishes the game with keeping thalls always or letting everyone go, we can't know how important slavery is in this game.

Here's a dumb question, how do I assign my thralls? I have the 3 starting ones and I upgraded the homestead but I can't figure out how to put the thralls to work. Thanks !

There is a slider bar when choosing upgrades.

Each thrall gives you 1 tick on the slider and reduces the build time

In the middle of the Ribe market place there is a thrall merchant. The icon is bottom middle i think. Kind of hidden in plain sight with normal trade goods.

I probably missed that icon thanks ;p
Anywere in Britain thou since I already departed quite a while ago and I am kinda getting short on thralls for an undisturped build of mah enterprise xD

There's a merchant on Orkney or the homestead market depending on upgrades and stuff.

Do you know how to get the thrall trader in Orkney? I definitely checked out all my merchants (so far think I have three or four), but I also know there are certain events that unlock more so it wouldn't surprise me if you could recruit or attract a slaver.
Having your own clan market will allow you to buy thralls at a better price.

The 2 I know about are the guy at the Ribe market and the Merchant you get if you upgrade your home market. I would always recommend upgrading your home market, btw, just because you can do a little creative trading amongst them to come out far wealthier than you went in.

All that said, you only need so many thralls (as far as I know) so no need to overstock yourself.

Exactly, you only need so many, but they're worth a lot. Once Ribe is inexplicably locked out you have no one to sell them to unless you build the market, but I went with the foelkmoot because I'm trying to maximise power in this run.

Fortunately I did get the thrall merchant to appear on Orkneyjar. According to her dialogue, her appearance is time-based, she appears towards the end of the game, maybe 3/4 or 2/3 of the way through.
