Hel Hath No Fury (possible spoilers)
I'm trying to figure out how to resolve the quest. I've found the basement and the "you're not telling me everything" clue. Still I have no idea who burned down the house.

Edit:
It looks like the woman did it:
- quest name is one indication (hell hath no fury...like a woman scorned)
- why would the guy kill his bed slave he was about to escape with?
- she was the one "not telling everything"

Still I'm uncertain. Anyone found anything else?

You won't find out who burned down that section of Ribe until much later in the story. I hope you have high sense :D.

8 sense, hopefully that will be enough

the woman thought the guy did it and the guy thought the woman did it because they hated each other. In fact, it was someone else whose key you found in the basement and later you will be able to confront the real arsonist.

also the slave wasnt burned to death. she was stabbed by the woman for obvisous reasons. But her kids also died so it was not her. The guy also didnt do it because he had no reason to. its a tricky story with a twist in the end.

Thanks for the replies. It would drive my completionist mind mad, thinking that I've overlooked something. You saved my sanity. Hah!
Spoilers: some lunatic arsonist burnt the place down. You will see him much later on the island of Orkneyjar. You can sentence him to death if you have high senses and realize where he is from.

Spoiler: You actually don't need high senses if you got access to his house in Ribe back in chapter 1. Than you can directly confront him.

Really? I mean I got high senses and I had to go through a sense check. I'm not sure if you can get it if you accessed his room but dont have enough sense.

I don't believe Brana did it. What made me suspicious was meeting her husband, Vranger, in the swamp. Just a bit up river from him and his mired wagon was the body of a slave girl floating in the water by the small bridge. He said he'd run off with his bed slave. What more, neither Mani or the other three rescued thralls mentioned another thrall drowned in the water on the way to the camp. Never explained why he'd murdered his bed slave if the body was hers. Unless she got clingy and he just didn't want to share what he'd stolen.

So whose body was it in the celar? There was no blood on the toy wooden sword, and there were no struggle wounds on the children. Both children succumbed to smoke inhalation. They might have been hiding and witnessed a murder- after which they were locked in the celar with the body as the house burned. Theft wasn't the motivation as there was plenty of valuables lying around.

What I don't understand is how the key to the arson's house ended up in the celar with the victim. The arsonist was single man- there was only room/accomodations for one in that house- nothing that suggested he was a family man before his mental break. There's no apparent relation ship between him and the victim and his house and the house where she and the children are found are on opposite sides of town from one another. None of it signifies.

The only link you have to him and the burned out house is in that later dialogue once you make the check, but nothing you talk about explains anything more than his having set the fire and being mental.

Maybe it's also necessary to talk to that one trader in Orkneyjar right at your ship beforehand. He mentions that someone from Ribe has just recently arrived and that he's pretty unsettling.

...together with the shrine to the fire-god you saw in his house in Ribe you then know enough to have an additional dialogue option which outright calls him out on it. The sense check about the smell you seem to remember is still there but not necessary. I know, because my PC had too low a sense skill.

Isn't it heavily implied that he only needed her to help him carry most of the stuff he stole? He even admits to killing her "she was only worth (xx amount of money). Legally I was in the right".

So whose body was it in the celar?
Imo, it was never stated that the cellar you can access belonged to Brana's house. The whole neighborhood burned down; it was probably a random house from someone else.

You just need to check the little bones scattered around the fire, and your character will remember the house. :)

so... what did people do with Vrangr?

while it sounded like fun to capture him and drag him back to his jilted spouse, I chose instead ot give him a second chance and hired him on as a merchant for my clan.

I'll just make sure to warn all the women away from him. ;)
