I've been playing Blitz for almost 6 years. During that whole time there were people saying that Blitz was dead or dying. Whether Blitz is better or worse than some other game depends entirely on what an individual wants and enjoys in a game. As long as there are a large number of people who enjoy Blitz and play it, Blitz is not dead.
You can find an accurate player count by selecting Settings/General. The first number is the players on the cluster you are connected through. The second number is the total online in your server.
The numbers you would in the queue would not include the players who are already in a battle, are playing a different battle mode or are just doing garage stuff. It also is constantly changing. Not every player plays every day or at the same time.
Don't take my word for it. See for yourself: https://blitzanalysiz.com/latest/
So, this is how it goes.
A young gamer meets a cute Blitz app on Steam. Soon they are getting together every day and having a passionate relationship. Then, one day the young gamer see's a cute app with red hair. He looks at the Blitz app and says "You aren't what I thought you were! You lied to me! You like gambling too much and always want a new warpaint! You want me to learn new things and change how I play! {30 minutes later} You are dead to me!" The young gamer storms off.
Meanwhile, the cute Blitz app has thousands of sisters on Steam and millions on other platforms. They meet other young gamers, go to tournaments together, fly around on the moon, and chat with other gamers. It's not always easy, there are losses as well as victories, they have arguments and sometimes the cute Blitz app isn't feeling well and doesn't want to play. But they stay togetther in good times and bad times. Some even settle down and raise their own mods and warpaints (but how they do that is a discussion for mature audiences only).
