While this helps, there are over 500 tanks in the game. They seem real intent on converting all of them but at the current rate it may take years to finish.
There's also some controversy about the color quality in the new models (seen in Open Test, I guess). Players have complained that in some of the new models the colors appear washed out. There's been some changes made. (The screenshots still don't look as bright to me but I'm half r/g colorblind so I'm not the best judge of that).
What's PBR i'm awful with acronyms. And yeah, i get that, just like a shower thought and i haven't seen a yes or no as to were they still doing it.
That's a good question. Since I don't speak for Wargaming my answer quotes and links to the sources. It's longer as a result. (But, yes, that's their main graphics mode now).
Wikipedia has this to say about PBR:
"Physically based rendering (PBR) is a computer graphics approach that seeks to render images in a way that models the lights and surfaces with optics in the real world." Essentially, instead of textures being either all flat or all shiny, PBR renders them closer to real life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physically_based_rendering
Wargaming announced the arrival of PBR in May 2021. Castilla and Middleburg were the first maps to be redone in it. WG staff said then:
"It provides more realistic appearance of metal surfaces, fabrics, rubber, as well as shadows, reflections on armor, and global lighting. Check out the new environmental effects: during the battle, the tank gets covered with mud, sand or snow. Don't like the dirty ride? Wash your tank in a nearby body of water and enjoy the shine of the wet armor–until it dries out again.
The improved visual quality will first be available for the American heavies of the Yoh series and the German Kunze Panzer light tank. Starting from Update 8.1, all new tanks will be released with the new quality enabled. We'll also gradually upgrade visuals for all existing vehicles." https://discord.com/channels/481445776178806785/481780881543921664/850028391650689075
(The video is linked at the bottom).
Since then they have converted about 4 - 6 existing tanks each month. Here's a Disord post on the 6 PBR versions of existing tanks that we will see in 10.4 https://discord.com/channels/481445776178806785/502008146630541333/1163439670332493844
Unfortunately, PBR map textures can not be processed by all devices. When players experienced fps drops on Castilla, WG recommended setting terrain quality to medium settings (thus avoiding PBR)
