Decent penetration, good damage, good front armor. Would go for it.
Funny thing is I earned Mastery badge two times on Panther II despite it being one of my least favourite tanks :P
There is more damage but it’s a lower DPM so it’s not that useful anyway.
So I say Panther II is better.
Anyway, I would just make it a decision of what to get first, as the Panther I is a great tank once you get to know it and play it right (keep out of brawls until you really have to/got backup/enemy is heavily damaged; use your superior gun to snipe, mobility allows decent reallocation), it's one of those few tanks I keep even after full research, you should just keep playing it to research both the Panther II and Tiger II.
The fact that you call the Tiger 2 far superior, and question the Panthers to not being true mediums shows that you are just playing it wrong. Lemme guess, a "true" medium would be something like russian/chinese brawlers? Not all tanks play alike, you know? But using a tank in a way that he is not meant for is a sure way to fail.
That said, not every playstyle suits every player, that's why many people specialise in a specific playstyle, using specific tanks.
