So when you shoot a tank and pen its armor, you can either hit a module, or the main part of the tank that contains it's hitpoints. Hitting a module has a chance to damage it, based on a few factors, so when you hear "critical hit" etc that means you hit a module, and may, or may not damage it.
You can also damage multiple things at once. Such as shooting high explosive shells can damage things close to the impact area. You can also shoot tracks on some tanks and damage both the tracks, and the tank body behind the tracks. The shell will go through the tracks (having a chance to damage them) and then hitting the tank body behind the tracks. Like if you shoot a tank from the front you might not be able to hit the body through the tracks, but if you shoot from the side, you might. Just depends.
