also, don't aim at spots that are colored red.
i'm sure if you do aim at a certain spot, you will hear the announcer says either "frag shot" or "not penetrated".
Mediums will try to wiggle, so make sure to aim at the front or lower plate if you can, as it will show you where you can pen (because it will not show a red hue over the armor plate).
Heavies are slow, so they allow you to aim in and hit weak points, like the turret cheeks, lower plate or observation ports (commonly called the "cupola" or "cupolar).
Tank destroyers, well, are a mix. Sometimes they have great armor, like a Jagd. Pz. E 100, or sometimes no armor to all, like a Rhm.-Brsg. WT, who you can pen with HE.

it doesn't reflect real life 100% at all.
APCR is premium ammo where its penetration is higher but the damage is lower.
same with HEAT ammo, it is premium ammo.
