How does this work?

When I start the game I get an empty square of land with a stump on it. When I click on it it disappears. There are no instructions and the few buttons available have no effect.

What am I supposed to do?

The stump disappears because you have the scissors symbol activated... click on it and you see it crossed which means you deactivated it. The drop of water symbol is now activated, you click it until the bar at the bottom right fills up completly and your tree grows....

@7_of_9: It doesn't grow after watering though. It's just a stump.

I'd like to ask same question - How does this work??
It was obvious to me that I've cut it out by clicking it with scissors. Ok, lesson learned, restart. Watering it ... bar grows, turns red, nothing happens. Reset, does nothing, green bar grows, turns red ... WTF? after reading guides all I learn that after it turns red, it's "over", until I don't cut some branches, but if I cut anything, "i loose" since that means cutting out the not-yet-tree completely.
