Thats my problem too. Maybe we have to use shortcuts? I can't find any.

This was probably a quick after thought and solution to prevent making previous races far too easy to obtain the 3 stars, and grind for xp/currency (even though the latter would become fairly redundant after rank 20+)

From my experience, it seems that any race reducing the power of your hydrojet brings it down to a power level suited for the AI, but doesn't take into account the upgrades that you've spent currency on for lower tier hydrojets, making the level even harder than to just pick a lower tier hydrojet with upgrades suited for the event, which is about your only advantage over the brutal AI and their perfect cornering.

This is something else that can give you an edge over the AI as they definitely don't take shortcuts, certain levels do have small shortcuts, some only reveal after a lap or two has been made, in most cases they give the player more opportunity to perform stunts for extra boost power.

There are videos of these shortcuts on YouTube.

wow, seems like a game breaker imo. i can understand a set of races being hard during the races to get a new hydrojet but it seems mean that youre penalized for using your new trophy?

guess this game will be thrown on the backburner, at least it was cheap.

back to gta v stunt races, which are having a double xp/rp weekend.

I love the game, but this is the biggest issue I've found with it. I'm spending serious TIME grinding for cash for upgrades. What's the use if the upgrades only act as an inhibitor. Can't win races if I don't have enough upgrades; can't win races because I get gimped when I'm too powerful.

If I put the time in to grind and upgrade, then I shouldn't be penalised for doing that, no matter how easy or hard it might make some races.

Yeah, its very annoying.

Just come back when you have one of the later bikes fully upgraded. Even with the limiter, you should still be able to 3-star the early events easily. Just play events enough to be able to progress as you're going up the ladder and don't worry about 3 stars until much later. I agree that it's a bad design decision though.

I'm at the point in the game where you HAVE to 3-star events before being allowed to progress to the next one. Very frustrating to say the least...

I was able to 3-star all of the events up to (and including) DEADBEEF using a semi-upgraded starter hydrojet (no acceleration or speed upgrades at all), so it's very much doable to 3-star the events using the hydrojets the game expects you to 'have' at that point.

Which events are you struggling on, specifically? I could make a video or two to show you what I'm doing.

Personally I love the fact that the events put restrictor plates on jets that you wouldn't have access to when first accessing them, though I can understand that the inherent balancing makes beating them much harder since you can't rely on a 'superior' jet as a crutch. This game is brutal, but I'm glad about that.

Anyway. If you're struggling, I'd suggest waiting and going back with a more balanced hydrojet once you've levelled up and put points into things such as the start boost and drafting. It depends on the ones you're having trouble with as to what perks to buy, but race events become much easier with drafting and either boost start or more boost earned from tricks.

For stunt events you'd probably want to focus on unlocking a wider variety of stunts (unlock the Whiplash and Lariat asap, they are probably the most useful tier-2 tricks available in the game).

As far as Hydrojets go I'd suggest the Manta once you can get it, being the best-handling hydrojet in the game as well as having decent speed, but if it's too slow to beat AI under boost then the Scimitar or Striker are viable alternatives with dependable stats even when restricted.

FYI I beat Weaver using a Manta instead of the Fireball or Striker, which is pretty much impossible and probably not what the devs intended, so I hope that makes my advice a little more believable. :)

The Manta is going to be just too slow this time around for most later events after being the go-to jet in GP2. I just got the cop cruiser so I hope that will help with some of the events I've been struggling with.

For the event series up to and including Party Crew's the Manta may be the best choice, since it's going to be restricted to match the Switchblade, Typhoon and Scimitar. I definitely remember shredding early Slalom events with it, which is why I suggested it.

I'm personally gutted that the Manta just isn't competitive at end-game play. I also feel sorry for DEADBEEF (Vector Unit, you really should let us make all the jets end-game competitive. The Scimitar is my favourite jet and it's just too slow past the half-way point of the game.) :(

im done with this game for now, just too many other games out to bother with one i dont like honestly.

whats the point of getting new jets if they cant be used fully, seems to break the upgrade mentality.

you guys have fun though, maybe a patch might drop later down the line for my case

I assume they wanted success in this game to hinge more upon skill/track knowledge than having an OP jet. Learning the shortcuts and less obvious trick spots (especially on Firewater, Ruins and Tropico in my experience) helps immensely.

you hve a point, but the AI being perfect all the time really adds to the insult of the jets feeling useless.

They aren't perfect all the time. In the first half of the game they're actually pretty crap. :)
