Couldn't have said it better myself...
DIRT 3 has awesome snow tracks. But its physics is not better than Dirt 1 (which has snowy tracks also fyi).
Dirt 2 is compromise between DIRT 3 (towards arcade-sim) and DIRT/Grid1 (towards sim-arcade).
In my mind -- if you want pure racing (but manageable without steering wheel), go for F1 2012. If you want fun, not care about graphics that much (still is nice) but want really good feel out of virtual cars, go with DIRT1/GRID1 combo (is cheap now).
GRID2 is disappointment. The thing they done to physics (you can get two wheeling by contacting wall, and I am saying 90 degree slope is climbed as it was gum or something. Plus you cannot turn off assits, they turn on and off as they please and I cannot drive like that. Because of that, cars became unpredictable to a point, where it feels like fighting SHAO KAHN with SUB-ZERO, with blocking disabled, if you know what I mean. (MKKE)
Go for DIRT1/GRID1. It is cheap, there is no DLC bullsh1t, its gameplay is still stellar and it is cheap. Just do not get excited about successors. They are overly simplified, to a point where the gameplay is just of lower standards.
DIRT 1 isn't available on steam anymore.
Look at savvygamer.co.uk for discounts. (They had Dirt 1 discounted and I suppose even now for some 2-3 pounds).
dirt 3 is 100% a simulator - rally cars
grid 2 70% arcade 30% simulator or whatever - pro tunned cars
Dirt 3 is more of simulator, right, but pure arcade, still. Dirt 1 was better.
But... Grid 1 (I got for 3USD), that is something....
Today was a good day. I did not have three coffees, but two... and bought two games.Nice----:)
Do not buy GRID2.
Except Showdown :)
GRID 2 is street racing with occasional Touge style cliff, and some real-life tracks. The only time to have a problem with surfaces on the road is when you leave the road, in GRID 1&2... DiRT2 is pretty good but the physics didn't fully evolve until DiRT 3, much better but the tracks in DiRT 2 are great, so, if you're not playing using a wheel, DiRT 2 will be fine.
Off-Road is much different than Asphalt, you know, Okami... You must compensate much more for tyre grip in DiRT than you do in GRID, which only has an odd sense of over-steer to make it more difficult to drive, though the sampling rate of GRID 2 is much higher, so you do feel more connected to the road.
I presonally would recommend DiRT 3 for its realistic portrayal of handling, there are different modes for Rally like WRC (Pro) and Open vehicle sets, making Rallying a dynamic experience, and Trailblazer is similar but has faster cars, on longer tracks.
Alot of people complain that the tracks are just shortened or reversed versions of one long track, it plays better than it sounds, there is a rhythym to each track, unlike GIRD 2 where most of the tracks can be learned in under 3 days of casual racing.
And even if you've had a bad experience with Game for Windows Live before, it is simple, proprietary software, you login once with your key, and check save, save, save, and you login automatically when you start the game from then on. Get over GfWL...
