Question about weapons upgrade
If I don't want to change my primary fire type from the current upgrade - not vanilla - I must simply ignore the upgrade benches/robots?

It sounds a pity to let that scrap goes to waste, but if I sell the unwanted upgrade at the workbench, the gun is restored to the original firing mode.

So, after I get the upgrade I want, I simply ignore the upgrade bench robots? Or is there some kind of upgrade that's cumulative?

upgrade bench are optional. I completed the game without upgrading once (primary or secunday upgrade)

I understand that even the primary weapon is optional, as there's the punch drunk achievement for completing the same without it.

In your case, it would be wise for you to clear the level, get the upgrades, and get a refund at the workbenches, especially considering that the amount of scrap is finite, right?

You really don't need scrap that much. There's enough disposable weapons, backtracking rooms with ammo, secret rooms with shield, and food dispensers that you can safely skip a majority of it and be fine. Not to mention the free scrap you get for beating par time. Even in the first few shops, it's very easy to just rob them.
The only time I find scrap to actually be useful, is in the STRAFEZONE.exe runs, where credits are the things that put you at the top. This is when I save all my scrap and do the (really awful) scrap to credit transfer.
