STRAFE: Gold Edition
The game gets too much undeserved hate
Honestly it feels like 90% of all the negative reviewers are by people who either cant read or only played console shooters with autoaim.

First off, the fact that people think it's supposed to be a 100% quake copy and then complain about the fact that its hard and shouldnt have "roguelike elements" are the dumbest of them all. Because the game is'nt a "FPS with roguelike elements" its a "ROGUELIKE FPS" so taking out roguelike stuff would make the game completly different from what it is supposed to be.

After that people complain about how hard is the game. As an average gamer (in many fps games i have a kdr around 3 (just for comparison)) i found the game a bit higher difficulty than normal, but after dying around 4 times on icarus i started to slowly learn the game and how it works and everything became much more enjoyable. In the end, if you are so bad at video games, that you have to stop everytime you have to shoot a thing, you can resort to your "boring" playstyle.

Speaking of it, the game is as boring as you want it to be (which i honestly find as a fair thing). Its like having a boring lifestyle and then saying "Uh life sucks, its boring and is not fun at all and i cant change it." You dont have to have a huge amount of skill to play strafe without resorting to boring strats, because its really easy to learn and handles quite nice (atleast for me). Every game would be boring if you try hard enough. Your defence is your mobility and by completly neglecting it, you remove like 40% of fun from the game. And even the strafe-hopping is easy as hell compared to real b-hopping.

And afterall, the devs are constantly updating the game and making really nice changes.

obviously this "tirade" wont change much, but atleast i hope that it'll change mind of actual normal players that are capable of playing games the way they are meant to be.

Game's fantastic. It IS a nod to older first person shooters like Quake, Doom, Marathon (Halo before halo) and then you have all these insane infected mutants who will all stop at nothing until you're killed to death.

By the way, they mentioned something about the beta branch for the game in the news, so Im currently trying out and it's 10 times better. New enemies, rooms, great fun. oh yea you can save your progress at each end of the map.
Indeed.
The game is awesome, nice gameplay, perfect soundtrack.
Difficult but possible.
I love that pixel and voxels look.
I'm always having a blast playing this game.
But i must admit, it lacks info in-game, and needs a lot of optimization.
It wasn't marketed as what it is. That's why people are mad.

This and the game sucked big time when it released, it was full of glitches and bugs, hell you could consider yourself lucky if it didnt crash each time it loaded a new level, a lot of these issues existed for months after this game released (hell the ps4 version is basically unplayable to this day).

You're suppose to feel like a badass but your constantly back strafing because the weapons are not efficient and the ennemies rekt you it's not fun at all
well said my friend, this game is amazing and just like any roguelike the more you play the more you learn and get better and better! Its Fkn wonderful
And then lets not forget that many big reviewers couldnt get past Icarus. I really hope that no-one will tell them to come back and play it again after this update since the core gameplay hasn't changed much, they'd still just struggle on Icarus. bad game, didnt finish first level, 1/10
hahahha yea they were aweful players. unbelievable really. But also lets not forget all these review bombs, that have .1hours in game that leave a huge page of nonsense just to troll the game. I have never seen such crazy stuff in my life haha
Pango, what was the game marketed as ?

For me personally, i got what i saw in trailers - no less no more.

and if you are always backstrafing and backpeddaling then maybe try and learn more ways around enemies and how to avoid them?

overall thanks for replies guys, i hope this post may remind the devs in hard times that the game has dedicated fans :)
Ive been eyeballing Strafe since it was first released and saw the awful reviews. But ive kept tabs on it and have seen signs of it being significantly improved over time. The devs probably released it too early or should have kept it in early acess.

This is just false, We've taken part in an incredible amount of interviews, posts and articles about being a blend of old school shooter and a roguelike.

Our first post on our original devblog in 2014 stated that STRAFE® would be a roguelike FPS, our KS described changing levels, upgrades and perma-death, we also released 20 min gameplay showcasing the roguelike elements during our KS campaign.

Even our gameplay trailers have quotes about being a roguelike and our live action spots describe the elements of the genre.

We have receipts for all of this, we just have an issue of people seeing STRAFE® and assuming they know what it is. Then feeling burnt when it's not, even though we've done our best to explain it.

If you watched one trailer then assumed you knew what the game was and didn't read the store page or any more info on the game then the issue isn't with us "falsely advertising the game".

We put as much info out there as we could, but unfortunately a lot of people missed it or only saw a single piece. With this update we saw the opportunity to remedy this issue the best we could. That's why the new trailer has "roguelike" in the first shot of the video. Also instead of just having it written in the description box and "about this game" section (which is how it's been) we've added in more detail and described the roguelike elements in other ways just in case people have never heard of the genre.

It doesn't benefit anyone to have players believe they are buying a different game, esp when we are proud of the game we made. We think its just a matter of expectations, most of the people who know what the game is are more open to enjoying it, but if another player thinks it's a "Quake clone" no matter how good of a Roguelike FPS it is, they will be disappointed.
What also honestly bothers me, is that people say it's a "FPS with rogue-like elements" but thats not true, because it is a "roguelike fps". It may sound similiar, but it carries a different meaning.

Also the fact that game forces "boring playstyle" is stupid. Its as boring as you make it to be just like postal 2 is as violent as you make it to be.

Strafe has a great factor of replayability that is honestly one of the key elements, because replayable games may live on forever.

But the popular game journalists neglect the info that is given to them on a silver platter and make up their own info. Shame on them, this game is allready awesome and its constantly updated which is absolutely amazing!

This game is honestly one of the most fun games i've bought on steam

To be fair "Frag like it's 1996" as a marketing tag line really did set you up to be compared to Quake.

You should assume that a lot of people just watch the trailer. I said "marketing" and I don't really think your devblog counts. The trailer makes it look like it's a Quake clone. Thousands of people who watched the trailer thought you'd made a Quake clone. If so many people get the wrong idea about what your game is like from the trailer then it's your trailer that is at fault, not the people who watched it.
