Why is this lava stuff in the game?

This lava stuff is everywhere, and it grinds a game that's about fast-paced movement to a halt. Why is this in the game at all? It's anti-fun. I could ask the same question about fall damage.

Because blood and gore.

It really sucks and if you think it's bad in the first environment wait until you get to the second, those wall enemies that spew it out come back on steroids and it's awful. There's nothing fun about having a good chunk of the floor hurt you at all times, especially when the hitboxes around the acid are janky.

I found that there's an item that will protect you from acid damage unless you stand still on top of it. Having this item made the game a lot more enjoyable.

I also found that you can shoot through glass with some weapons (glitch?) this makes it easier to steal from shopkeepers because you can kill their defense bots.

I also found an item, rocket boots or something, that will let you slow your fall.

With these items, I was able to reach the boss. Without these items, I don't think I would have even wanted to keep playing that long.

It's not very useful imo, you can already just bunny hop on it to not take damage.

I gave this a try, and as far as I can tell I take damage from acid the moment I land in it. Bunny hopping doesn't work.

Just barely touching acid for a moment does prevent damage but fully negating it requires a lot of precision with your jumping. You can mostly mitigate it by hopping somewhat lazily - but you also can cover up acid with blood. For the most part there are ways to mitigate the amount of acid released by an enemy or spewed onto the level, even before that spew occurs. It's different from enemy to enemy. Also yeah, Zone 2 does have new acid enemies introduced and new hives, but the enemis can be killed in certain ways to avoid the acid sputters, and the hives only cover a circular radius around them. More importantly, Zone 2 has really large play areas that offer multiple paths across danger.

You should prioritize destroying those acid spewing enemies first to limit their spread. Also you can shoot the heads off of enemies to paint over acid, or use explosives to make blood spread out as well.. Otherwise use strafe jumping to avoid the acid, it takes some getting used to and the first zone is notably more difficult due to the close quarters nature but eventually you get good at avoiding it. Also yes, there is an item that removes the damage caused by standing on acid spills (mostly). The acid enemies in zone 2 also only spread acid when killed with explosives or headshots, shoot their legs and they don't leave any messes to avoid.

That acid blood is 100% horsecrap on Icarus. There's so many opportunities to screw yourself into forced damage because the acid is covering a doorway or elevator you need to use to progress.

The worst is when it's a low, narrow hallway you can't Strafe Jump through because you'll hit your head on the ceiling, bounce into the floor, and still be on jump cooldown, so you lose all your speed and take some damage anyway.

It gets much better off Icarus when the killer environments aren't so tight and you'll always have an option of walking around it.

A good tweak might be to make exploding barrels also remove/destroy some of the floor acid. Adds more connectivty/use to items and depth. Maybe grenades and any explosive splash dmg too.

Even in a completely tight hallway where you'll bonk your head, you can mitigate almost all damage with a good hop, or if you desperate don't want to take 3 damage, which I can understand, you can lure an enemy over and kill them nearby, and then stomp on their corpse to slide gibs over the acid.

Generally speaking though, a whole hallway should not be filling up with acid, the jellyfish leave little specks and the hive itself blasting away is almost always up to you and your gunfire.

If acid continues to greatly frustrate you, you can buy some bloodbugs as well to huck at whatever you want with rightclick and completely coat in blood. (They're usually meant to be left clicked for health gain)

If you strafe jump you won't take much damage (if any).

Maybe I've just been unlucky, but this seems to happen a lot.

Not sure what you mean by this?
