Other than Chrono Trigger, I can't think of any real games with locked chests like this.
Tales of Zestiria immediately comes to mind.
The original version of Final Fantasy XII was even more devious. It had several very specific chests where if you opened them early, another chest later into the game would disappear.
That chest contained the strongest spear in the game.
That was just dumb.
Of course I never used spears, so it wasn't the worst thing if I missed it.
