This game is begging for a modern version.

As popular as Star Wars is, I've always hated the complete lack of quality strategy games in this universe. The imperial star fleet vs rebel fleet is a rich tapestry to make strategy games but I can only think of this and Empires at war.

I'd love to see a grand strategy 4X style title set in the Star wars universe.

I concur, sadly the closest we are likely to get is Empire at War, which was a dumbed down version of Rebellion with terrible land battles.

I agree, Empire at War is entertaining, but arcade-ish. Rebellion was my favorite Star Wars game. At the same time this was released, they had a Star Trek strategy that was loosely built around the old Civilization 2 engine. I always felt like this would have been a perfect setting for a turn-based strategy as well.

I always wondered why we never saw a Master of Orion 2 clone in set in the Star Wars universe, as we did with Star Trek: Birth of the Federation.

Empire At War also suffered from terrible optimization and limits

like, once i conquered everything but Hoth and Yavin, and reduced everything but oruscant to rubble with the deathstar, the game would kill itself when i created my fleet of 1500 imperial star destroyers

(note, i mean when i had that many just in space as a fleet, never got to attack with that many, the 1500th built crashes the game)

Indeed, I played this game for hundreds of hours (way before steam release) and a modern version would be an instant buy for me.

The only good thing about EaW was the space battles. Land battles were a joke and macro management system sucked.

yes, did love the space battles, plus had a mod that gave me tons of extra ship types.
Would also buy a redo of this game.
