Before moving onto different islands I would suggest to gather a lot of food and make sure that your creatures are healthy. So no double up immunity genes, good eyesight and no crippled paw. When you have that settled look for useful genes like nimble fingers, antlers and ram horns give you strength, strength is good to fight carnivores.
Also make sure that your one gem babies are safe (an adult or teen beside them) when a blue bird is circling in the sky.
Poison fangs are good to gather from toxic berry bushes and to poison predators. You can then eithr travel up to unlock the challenge and harder islands and maybe make your way to Adam's home island (make sure you still have home island immunity) or you can just travel to which ever island you like and try to survive there. Or you can go on a mission to unlock all of the genes.
Really at that point you can do whatever your like :)
Also when I move to islands is it that only 2 other creatures can go with me?
Otherwhise I assume you mean 'derp snout' when you are talking about ugly creatures. At the beginning you can only mutate normal snout which I would not recommend if you want to keep poison fangs. Later you can also mutate big nose, which is good for smelling. Oh yeah, do you know about the senses? Right, lower corner, you can toggle between listening, hearing and seeing you can also toggle between them by pressing 1,2,3. Also you can rename your creatures in the family tree and change their gem colours.
Jojo already gave a more than adequate answer, but I'll also try to explain if others have the same question.
How do genetics work:
It's not too complicated if you've taken biology, but if you're new to the sciences, then it may be more difficult. Each creature is diploid (it has two copies of each characteristic or "gene"). One copy of the characteristic may be "dominant" or "recessive" to the other genes for that specific trait.
Poison fangs are quite recessive to the other snout genes. They are useful for poison berries, which is why I try to keep them in my tribe by mating Nichelings who have it together. (using notation, "pf" for poison fangs, I would make the following couples: PF/PFxpf/pf (children will be all PF/pf, carriers for poison fangs) or PF/pf x PF/pf or pf/pf x pf/pf (which will always make pf/pf, poison fanged children)
The goal is to return to Adam's Homeisland (before he was taken by the blue bird). So yes, you are meant to move to different islands.
Nimble fingers can be found on wandering creatures, as well as by mutating them (thorough unlocking them by picking up lots of berries). Yeah, but only the derp snout is considered ugly? There are other snout types.
Well... you complete the tutorial, find Eve, and move Adam and Eve and their 3 (or fewer) children to the next few islands (until you get to a really big one that has a new island in the northern horizon). Then have more children, get enough food, and try to move the new travel tiles in the north.
Just curious - why wouldn't you want double immunity genes? I'm also brand new to the game, but it seems like having double immunity would be a good thing, no? You would never get sick if you have great immunity. Why is this a bad thing in this game, please?
One good general tip; try to push medium body unless you have specific islands in mind. Since medium body raises a lot of stats without any downside, it can be useful if you don't have other bodies unlocked yet. For example, if you were to try and survive on a cold island, you'd generally prefer big body...but big body is only unlocked by being on the cold islands and experiencing cold. Medium body may not have as much cold resistance, but it's something, and it gives a little bit of speed too.
- Do what you can to keep the poison fang genes, antler genes, and stinky tail genes you may start with, as these are very useful and hard to re-acquire if you lose them.
- Stinky tail not only repels predators, it repels the disease-carrying flies in the swamp, too.
- You can never have too much food. Saving at least 1000 food before searching for Adam's home island is great.
