Medium islands:
Hot:
First one available would be Burning Savannah (constant).
I don't think Rainforest actually gets hot, but if it does, then only at times I think.
Pretty sure Overgrown Jungle has hot climate at times
Swampy Hill I don't think so.
Cold:
First Snow has times with cold climate, but not constantly.
Hard Islands:
Hot:
Oasis should be hot all the time.
Pretty sure Jungle Gate is hot at times.
Cold:
Summer Mountains is cold at times.
Long Winter might take a bit to get cold and then stays cold for quite some time. (Or it just takes a few days for snow to fall, forgot.)
Killer Islands:
Hot:
Pretty sure Deep Jungle is hot at times.
Cold:
Frost Lands should be cold all the time.
The thing is that there are very few islands where you get hot/cold right away. If you're not sure what island you're on, hang around a bit, keep checking the mutation menu.
Hope this helps a little. :)
I'm on my 7-10th island now however and I've only encountered savannah, grassland and jungle. Is that normal? Should I be finding frost or deep jungle? So far ever island has had relatively similar biomes
North goes to more difficult island, but the first time to go that way (after achipelago - the group of islands that always has the same shape), there is something blocking it. On Overgrown Jungle you have to destroy 5 roots hidden randomly in the jungle to clear the stuff growing on the northern travel spots. In long Winter you have to survive until it gets warm again and snow cubes blocking the north spot melt. In both cases the tutorial tells you about it.
Right (east) travel spot goes to an island with the same difficulty.
Left (west) travel spot goes to an easier difficulty.
So if you keep going just left and right, you are not going to reach anything different.
When you get to savannah, you can hang out for a while though, and get those genes unlocked, if you have/find enough food.
