What is the point (for you?)?
So I've already sunk in 3 hours and planning on a lot more. I love the mechanics and idea. However I feel myself drifting without much of a goal and therefore no satisfaction from reaching that goal. Have I just not gotten far enough in story mode? How do you make this a game instead of a simulation?

Well, when I played Niche for the first time I just loved to try out all of the genetic possibilities. So that fur colour with that pattern and that eye colour. I just loved experimenting. Then I wanted to explore all islands (I admit back then we only had 3-4 so that wasn't as big of a task) and now after I have explored almost everything there is to Niche, I just like to RP and tell stories :)

We also have a Niche challenges group (can find it by clicking on my profile) in case you want to take a look there.

Setting yourself some goals (like conquering an island, getting a certain gene etc.) is usually a good idea. you can also start a challange and try to complete that.

Some people also roleplay and use random generators to spice things up a little.
Either way, it depends on what you'd like to do, i guess.
I'm currently on a mission to give my entire tribe the panda pattern.

The point for me is that it's just something i can do every so often that helps me relax after a long day.

As the others have mentioned, Story Mode in itself is a goal.

I also tried to work on the Steam Achievements, in which you will do lots of experimentation.

Whatever you do, Challenges, RP, or just trying to make cool Nichelings, it should be done in a way that is enjoyable to you.

I mostly try to get achievements and experiment. Doing things like dividng up my nichelings into different groups that are good at different things (swimming, hunting, gathering, etc.) so i can focus on getting lots of genes and food. After i get my desired genes and its no longer difficult, i start to focus on cosmetics like eye and horn color to get really pretty or cool looking nichelings. Story mode is really the only thing in the game that gives you a true end goal (reaching the home island), but in sandbox mode you can make your own goals. Things like making a nicheling with what you would consider 'perfect' genes, surviving a certain amount of days, traveling to a certain island, getting achievements, doing challanges, anything really.

Aim for the "Family Reunion", "Homecoming" and "Natural Selector" achievements?

agreeing with all the above. plus, i like to give my nichelings personality, think of why they're doing what they're doing, and really get into their family line (if it's a big pack of 25+, i'll usually only pick my favourites to do this to lol).

i've got almost 50 hours in niche doing this x)

Try and get the "Never Gonna Give You Up" achievement. Also creating a good story is helpful.

I used to be like that, but what made me get attached is what Sooty said, creating a story. For some reason, I found creating gods/goddesses helped me get attached.

Of course, it's different for everyone, but I hope you'll get more attached!
