It used to be that you could very rarely get wanderers with Round Ears as a recessive, but I don't know if that's still in the game with how it's part of Home Island now.
That is on one of the older versions, where, as Fortuna said, you could still fine wanderers with recessive round ears. I believe now they are exclusive for Adams family though.
Maybe we need to label that the gene can only be unlocked in story mode when you mouse over the locked gene?
Likewise, I think the bearyana mouseovers need redoing too. It's very unlikely you're going to "invite them" into your tribe when you have to breed it in lol. Maybe "Breed/Invite an animal with this gene into your tribe" or something? That's a bit long, though. Hm...
